Hey everyone, i've posted a few times now about different types of engine swaps for my 94 TBI. I looked at putting in a 96 vortec 5.7, searching out a vortec 7.4 and doing some major work, or swaping in something else. I guess i'm just curious as to what everyone else thinks. what would be the most desireable/reasonalbly...notice i did not say cheap...priced option. I already have the intake for using the TBI setup on a vortec 5.7 long block, but my mechanic keeps trying to talk me out of it. Mainly because of computer issues but i know i could just go to one of the pcm modifiers on this site. i guess i just need a little bit of a push to get the ball rolling then i'll see how i like it. the truck is one i plan on keeping for a long time and turining into a possible show truck or just something that's nice to look at. Please Help!!!

go to GMPERFORMANCE.COM and take a look at the engines i personally like the ram jet 502 c.i.d. but go with the ram jet 350 it's fuel injected and it good in performance and not hard on the gas pump

those might be a little high for my range. I guess i'm just hoping to see what some other people have done and if they're have been many problems with their setups, like computer issues things like that. I'm probably going to get a vortech long block and use the intake for the stock TBI just for now. At some point in the future i would like to put something like a ram jet or other high performance engine. i like the idea of a 383, what kind of block would you guys recommend. The TBI?? or vortec??? or any 350???

a late model TBI block or better will have the roller provisions on it. Some Vortec heads with an Edelbrock Performer intake for the TBI/Vortec combo and the 383 rotating assembly.

You'd have to modify the Edel head to fit the Vortecs...GM is the only that I've seen that is Vortec to TBI bolt on.

I already have the GMPP intake. Where's a good place to get the 383 rotating assembly???? I got a line on a vortec 5.7 out of a 96. It's got about 100k but the guy claims it's in good condition. He totaled his truck two weeks after dumpin a ton of cash into his tranny.

Re: TBI help...need a new motor

When the stock 5.7 liter in my 94 Z71 got to 175k, I was looking to upgrade. A close friend is the parts couter guy at the local Chevy dealer. I talked to him about a crate motor.

I was interested in the 350/350hp. He made some calls, said the 350/350hp was great for a Camaro or Chevelle, but a truck would need torque lower in the rpms. He recomended the 383HT

With his discount I got it for $3,400.00. I ordered the TBI/Vortec manifold, bored it out to 52mm each side. Sourced a bone yard 7.4L TBI. Made a spacer plate to seal the 7.4L TBI to the TBI/Vortech manifold.

Using 7.4L fuel pump, custom burned Eprom. Truck was built to pull a enclosed Haulmark snowmobile trailer. Pulls very well. Swap is not for the faint of heart, but if you good with tools, don't mind leraning as you go, it might be for you.

Not sure what your looking to achieve, 1/4 or towing etc. I did this swap back in 02, it has 50k on it now and for towing I like my set-up.
