im running stock springs in my 305 with an 1102. i dont drive it on the street anymore, i use it as a derby engine. with the abuse that i put it through, with no breakage, you should be fine. on the street, you'll never beat on an engine like i do in the pit.

Go with an 1103 cam. I ran Z28 valve springs on my swirl port heads that I got from xtremefi for like 25 bucks and had no problems.

I've got stock springs on Aluminum L98 heads with a summit 1105, they've also got 1.6 ratio rockers. No problems

How do you like the 1105 cam? I'm hoping to swap one in this fall or winter.

I like it just fine, it's in a small block chevy in a T-bucket. ie: go kart. So I can't relate HP & TQ to a 5700lb truck, but it has a nice lope at an idle and sounds wicked mean.

Yea thats kind of what I'm wanting. I've got plenty of gear but I want more HP and of course some cam lope is always nice.

Sorry to jack the thread Norcal

any reason for the 1103 over the 01 or 02? i am really looking for a torque biased cam for the most part i know my truck will never be fast with mods as simple as i will be doing right now . based on specs and my DD2k comparison the 1103 looks to bring on the power a little later and peak a little later than i will ever see, i spend most of my time around 1500-2300rpm with a rare jump up to 3k+ when i need to get it moving.

would the general consensus be no new springs, or the z28s? i remember hearing the z28 springs were a good choice for a fairly mild cam in the TBIs

Re: What springs with a summit k1101 or 1102?

The 1101 is pretty much an RV cam. It makes torque and not much more HP then stock. The 1102 has a broader torque curve and has a respectable amount of HP to go with it. Probably the one you need. The 1103 has slightly less torque but still a broad torque curve but has more HP then the above two. I'm going off what desktop dyno is telling me.

Re: What springs with a summit k1101 or 1102?

thats about what i have come up with as well, im trying to shoot for the torque/mpg compromise. right now the truck has lately been fighting to hold 70 on the freeway with even a slight slight incline, just more pedal than it used to need and id like to remedy that plus make my towing experience a little better. dragging 21' wakeboard boats through the hills can be a little trying sometimes the way things are right now.

get the 1102, i used that before in my 350, and loved the instant torque! i call that cam the FBI cam; in my 383 i used the 1103, i love this cam also, its brute...

dont expect much lope from the 1102, the 1103 has some lope to it, but if you want lope 1104-1105 for sure..

all around, the 1102 is a good performer, and a real stomp puller. ohh it also like premium as do all the cams ive used...

tbi-max, what else did you have done when you threw that 1102 in the 350, and did you end up changing out springs as well?

    thanks

And why do you say that? My comp cam almost identical to the summit 1101 cam and I run 87 octane and its never ran better. The cam has next to no influence on what octane you need as far as I'm concerned.

I'm running 87 with a fairly large cam for the 5.3 and it runs like a raped ape on it...

it can depending on how much it affect static compression relative to the stock cam, or so i have heard. not near as big of an impact as other factors though. id love to stay on 87 or 89.....i live in california im close to selling body parts for gas

being that it has a direct effect on dynamic compression ratio, the cam has alot to do with the octane required.

Re: What springs with a summit k1101 or 1102?

yea, thanks guys for explaining why the truck performed tons better on premium! it was explained in a previous thread, but i forgot, but yea, static compression... i believe airdeano explained it better before.

anyways my burban hates the regular stuff, it goes through it like water, 350 or 383 with 87 octane, and those cams. the 92 is what i normally use, cause it can take almost twice as long for it to burn; and performance night & day difference. the only thing i think i have the hypertech chip, which might be doing something with my fuel tables.

Oldred when i start my own tune with the Ostrich, and get rid of the hyperjunk, I will try to do a tune for regular octane. Cause the paperwork for the hypertech says use "premium" octane.

NorCal, the stock heads for 193 and same springs, rods, 202k, etc. It ran amazingly better than the stock cam in a tbi 350. Only other mods at that time was tbi spacer, and msd
