if you don't need the knock sensor hole you can put a regular steel one on!

steel ones wont fit the vortec
bolt pattern is the same. just remove your reluctor ring
The still ones have 12 bolts and the plastic ones have 8
they will still fit, just dont use all the bolt holes.

ok thanks guys.
My Vortec blocks have all had ALL 12 bolts holes drilled and tapped, the plastic cover only uses 8 though, but the other 4 are there and ready.Originally Posted by Low_Yukon

Well the holes arent drilled and taped on mine!
Not to hijack the thread, just wanted to pass along a little info.
The front of the block is different from TBI to Vortec blocks - found out the hard way this weekend. We built a 383 for my son's '93 TBI truck, then swapped it into a '99 Tahoe we bought for him. We had a small oil leak that I attributed to trying to use the Vortec timing cover a second time. When we replaced it with a new one, it poured oil out of the front of the engine. The boss where the timing cover rests is much wider on a Vortec block than the one on a TBI block, particularly outside of the bolt holes. The built-in O-ring on the plastic cover barely touches this boss on both sides, leaked like hell on the driver's side of ours. I cleaned the block up good, then ran an 1/8" bead of a good oil resistant silicone on the boss and around all the bolt holes. Knock on wood, it's working fine so far, no leaks.
good to know!
