Vortec 350 to Vortec 454 Swap?

    How much trouble is it to swap my 97' 350 with a 96-00' Vortec 454? I heard it's drop in and no trouble no grim, but I just want opinions and help from you guys and how easy a swap to a Vortec 454 is? Will I need to change the tranny from 4L60E to a 4L80E or can a 4L60E handle a stock Vortec 454 with a little bit of programming and air intake upgrades?

    im no expert on these things but i would imagine a stock 4l60e wouldnt last very long up against a 454 if you were to mash the throttle very often. you might want to upgrade the front end suspension a little to help out with the extra weight. other than that i would imagine the swap might be pretty straight forward, even getting all the computers and electronics to work might not be too much of a pain

    Well the PCM for the 350 can control the 454, but it would be recommended to tune the PCM to the 454. As for the tranny, I've heard of people using the 4L60E on 454's but not the performance of it and how long they last. I plan on changing to a 4L80E or a built up 4L60E a little while after I intall the 454, I just wanted to know how a 4L60E is with a 454.

    i know the 4l60e would not last long at all from the torque of the big block. and i know the 454 vortecs have seperate injectors for each cylinder instead of the spider injection like a 350 vortec has so i would imagine as long as you have the complete 454 harness you could tune your 350 pcm for the 454. but if you cant get a 454 harness you can probably get the computer from it.

    and on a side note, what is the reason for putting in a 454? i had a 96 chevy with a 350 vortec and my buddy has a 454 vortec and my truck walks all over his.

    Well changing the intake/injectors is hell of alot easier, performance parts can really wake the 454 vortec up. BTW is your buddy's 454 vortec in a 3/4 ton or a 1/2? Cuz I'd say a 1/2 ton 350 vortec would smoke a 3/4 ton with a 454 anyday.

    I also thought about stroking my 350 vortec to a 383 vortec at one point, I've heard the Vortec 383's are niice too.

    Reviving this thread, it's a swap I'm currently considering. I own both complete trucks, so I can scavenge anything I need. As long as I have the complete harness and both have a 4L80E tranny, shouldn't this be a fairly easy swap? I hate wiring and chasing problems with them, how easy or difficult is it to pull the engine/tranny wiring harness? I'm hanging onto the one from the 350 truck, it may end up in a K-5 Blazer project I'm working on.

    the Vortec 350 stock has 1 injector per cylinder, just like the 454 Vortec does, except that all 8 injectors are in a centra pod or are in teh center of the spider, with tubes that have poppet valves on each end. the Vortec 454 use a conventional fuel rail injector setup. You will simply need to wire each injector hot wire and ground to the 454 Vortec injector plugs.

    The 454 and 350 BOTH use the exact same PCM, just with a different calibration file in it.

    I owuld simply install the 454 in teh 350 truck, use teh 350 harness and PCM. You only need to run 2 extra wires from teh PCM to the 4l80e trans to make it work.

    Vortec 454
    290 hp
    410 lb/ft torque

    Vortec 350
    255hp
    330 lb/ft torque

    This wont be a diffuicult swap at all, esp. since you have BOTH donor trucks.

    Pauly, is it difficult to remove the complete engine harness? If I can, I'd like to keep the 350 unadulterated harness along with the intake, distributor, etc. for a future injected project.

    ive been looking into the swap aswell. i blew a head gasket in my vortec 350. now im going big block with a cam intake and exhaust. well see how tax returns go, a whipple is possible

    The knock module inside the PCM is also different. if both the trucks have the 4L80E you should be good if not have a re-flash. While they are at it delete the torque management and rear 02 sensors, top speed limiter and shift points firm up. Also rear gear and tire size.

    The spider had 8 injectors therefore it does have seperate injectors for each cylinder. You don't need a different KM either.

    i am currently looking at the same swap, have you done yours allready and how did turn out, did the 350's harness mostly work for the 454? what other problems did you run into?

    I have also considered doing the same. I pull a gooseneck a lot and a little extra power would be nice. Let us know how it goes!
