I built and installed a 6" rod 388 in my 1997 K2500 . It has so much piston noise that it sounds like a diesel . Iknow the forged pistons are noisier than cast or hyper but this is rediculous . It's now back at the machine shop because when I changed the oil with 800 kms on it the oil looked like metallic paint . The pistons have .0035 clearance KB forged .

sure its not valvetrain related like did you get the valves adjusted propley...top of the lobe then 1/2 to 3/4 turn preload.....i mean thats jsut super noisy.....

.0035" sounds about right. does it change when it gets warm? it is a forged piston engine, and they're going to make a little more noise when cold.

valves should be adjusted on the base circle of the cam.

I've readjusted the valves at least 5 times . Took off the roller rockers and put stockers back on . Changed the lifters .It does quiet down a little when warm . The machinist is trying to tell me it's the Ram Jet /HT383 cam thats making all the noise .I'm thinking of going to 5.7 rods to try quiet this thing down .

Sounds like they didn't clearance the pistons properly. I have a setup similar to your KB forged pistons, full roller setup and a pretty healthy cam. Aside from a lopey idle I have zero valvetrain noise, and zero piston slap(even when it was -20F up here)

should sound like this or similar... you can hear the birds chirp... this is via the dolby 5.1 sound on my camera.

these are 5.7 rods, and i also think im tad low on oil.

    here is the other 1

your link is broke so i fixed it for you.

now that i seen that, its sounds like the valvetrain is messed up. my builder had his technique to get everything perfect without even starting my truck. so i suggest you find another shop before they cause more damage.

yeah, that's valvetrain for sure. rotating assemblies have a much deeper knock.

Re: How noisy is your 383 ?

It was a brand new "take out " cam and the numbers on the back of the cam were the last 4 numbers of the GM Part # . I couldn't get a cam card anywhere so I degreed the cam with the intake centerline at 106 degrees instead of 109 . I checked all the opening and closing when I degreed the cam and it worked out to the 196/206 .431/.451 109 centerline that the Ram Jet cam is supposed to be .I'm using LT4 springs and everything seems OK
Could this just be camshaft noise ?

or that you're just not adjusting the rockers properly...

I've tried every different way including with the engine running . I've set them according to the factory sevice manual , by the directions in the Crane roller rockers and by setting them at tdc firing for each cylinder . Take out all the freeplay add1 full turn . I even set them at 1 full turn with the engine running .

now that the lifters are pumped up you cannot add that '1 full turn' or you'll start to open valves.

jsut by chance i ahve seen it happen do you have the right lenght pushrods check to make sure your psuhrods are not touching the guide holes/plates at all look for scratch marks on the sides of them and make sure there the right lengs....cuase if you went from a falt tappet toroller cam you need shorter rods...cuase when i amde mine roller i did....but you miught have to short..by chance

no the rollers for the roller rockers are running in the center of the valve and the pushrods aren't touching anywhere

Re: How noisy is your 383 ?

Well I changed the pistons and rods .I'm now using Probe FPS series pistons with 5.7 rods .These are an offset pin design piston . All I changed was the pistons and rings . Piston clearance with the KB's was .0028 , the Probes are .003 after a little touch up honing . The difference is amazing . Almost no piston noise at all . You could barely hear the forged pistons at startup , once it's warm almost nothing .

Still sounds noisy to me, but every 383 that I have ever built has been noisy. Makes me feel a little better about how noisy the motor is in my Vette. I have a video of it running when its cold but have never posted it. Most of the videos I have made are of it running warmed up, when its fairly quiet.

The Vette has Mahle forged pistons and 6" eagle rods, piston clearance is .002 to .0025. Mine is so loud I have considered tearing the motor down, but the way it runs is whats keeping me from doing it.

My truck has Speed Pro hypertectics with 5.7 rods, its nowhere near as loud as the Vette.
