What's the biggest cam i can put on a stock 350 motor with out hurting it? I want that slow idle choppy sound. I want it loud :). (1988-1989 5.7l). I was thinking a Lunati 292/292 duration and 480 lift.

the stock heads will hold ya back from alot of lift...if you have them machined ya'd be in business. i got a lunati voodoo in mine and it really beats the ground at idle. and for the loud part....open headers are your friend lolOriginally Posted by shane_k1500

Replace the heads and you can run an computer-compatible cam as long as you have the right stall torque converter and rear end. I don't think you'll be able to do the choppy idle with a stock motor. Tuning the ECM would be difficult. Who cares if it has a choppy idle when it runs like poo and gets 9 MPG.

LOL that cam is going to make peak power above 6500 rpms, probably closer to 7
try try again. BTW duration is what effects where in the powerband cams make power

+1 to that. We have a cam thats like 29x/3xx duration in the 1966, I'd have to look up the cam card. That cam really starts to make power 4500-5000 and is still pulling incredibly hard at over 6000rpms.Originally Posted by 19doug90
heads, intake, severe work to the TB, a stall converter, and a set of gears.Originally Posted by shane_k1500
and it will still run like **** on the street.
you cant have a choppy idle and expect to drive it all the time.
