Ok please donít bash me, I know this horse has been beat to death but I canít find any MPG info specific to my truck.
I just bought a 2004 crew cab short bed Z71 49,000 miles with the 5.3L, auto trans, 3.73 gears and 265/70/17ís Bridgestone Duravis M700.

So I was wondering what I can expect for my MPG mostly in town driving with some highway. As of now it is stock with the exception of maybe the exhaust, it has duels leaving the muffler to the rear bumper.

Also what can I do besides being easy on the skinny to improve the mileage, I rarely go above 2000 RPM and at most so far has been 2500 RPM. Iím not looking to race I drive the bolance fast not my personal veh.

    Thanks Jeff.

i have an 04 ext cab 5.3 and when its warm out i avg around 15 city 18 hwy. when its really cold out its more like 12 and 15. Sometimes i can do better on the high way depending on how i drive.

for better gas milage you can make sure your tires are inflated properly or put a little extra in them and make sure your airfilter is clean. If you want to start spending money you can get an exhaust and or a custom tune

    Re: 2004 Silverado MPG?

Thanks gwhunter350, I'm not sure what the truck is currently getting because the cluster is bad and it’s going to the dealer next week for them to order the part. Then I will be able to check the mileage.

In response to you’re suggestion about tire pressure, GM recommends like 32 PSI but the tires I’m running says max cold PSI is 80 PSI. Looking at Bridgestone’s recommendation they say follow manufactures recommendation, but they really seem under inflated at 32 PSI.

Would a cold air system help, I have the high capacity air box from the factory.

I know this truck isn’t going to sip gas, I knew that when I bought it but I want to get the best I can. If I could get 20 on the highway when not towing the boat I will be very happy.

    Thanks Jeff.

i have an 04 extended cab 5.3 z71 with an afe stage 2 intake, predator programmer, and duals. I'm getting about 14.5 city and 18.5 highway. I just changed the setting with the programmer so i figured it went down a little bit but i havn't checked it yet.

good thread. I was also curious about this.

Correction GM says 35 PSI, I still think that the tires are under inflated.

    Re: 2004 Silverado MPG?

Your welcome, I would run them at 50psi.

A cold air intake is not really going to do much for gas mileage and on these trucks in order to run a cold air intake you need a muffler that is less restrictive then stock. If you keep your foot out of it and drive falt terrain you can get 20, but i see your in WV so flat terrain is out of the question. If money is not an issue i would say get a magnaflow exhaust system and a custom tune(blackbearperformance.com) And a CAI or drop in filter of some sort and you should be pretty close to 20

    MPG rating, 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500hd Ext Cab 143.5 WB 4WD Z71:

    http://www.stamasauto.com/used-inven...68a881f87510da

    http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/20037.shtml

Tire pressure ratings are rated for the vehicle, not the tires.

The rating on the door placard is for the vehicle weight and load rating for optimum tire performance and life.

The rating on the tire is the max pressure it will sustain.

If you exceed the vehicle manufacturers rating, you will have slightly less rolling resistance but you will "crown" the tire and wear the center out before the edges, thus cutting the life of the tire short.

    Re: 2004 Silverado MPG?

Get an Airaid Jr. It's reasonably priced and the stock intake tube is really the only thing holding your intake system back.

Mark your tires with a line of chalk going across the tread pattern. Then drive it over black top. If the line of chalk is even and as long as the tread pattern on your tire, then it's inflated at the right pressure.

Get a good catback exhaust system, it will help match the flow of the air intake and these together may net you 1 or less mpg.

Most of all, get a custom tune geared for mileage. That should give you at least 1 mpg and it will make your truck much more driveable.

One thing you need to realize is that if it were easy to squeeze more mileage out of our trucks, GM would have already done it. Look at their XFE trucks. They added more aerodynamic body cladding, lighter and more aerodynamic wheels, lighter tires with less rolling resistance, and taller gears to keep cruising rpms down. Even with all of that, they were only able squeeze one highway mpg out of it.

Built tranny sitting in the bed waiting to go in. Good things to come...

    Re: 2004 Silverado MPG?

not an 04, but on my 03.

stock with 285's i was getting about 14 around town, 15 or so highway. not really being easy on it, but not really hard on it either. cold weather i got 12-13 around town, 14 highway.

now with tune, headers, and 305/70-16 tires i get about 16 around town in teh summer, and 18 highway, cruise set on 75-80. cold weather, i am getting 14-15 around town, no highway trips since cold weather and mods.

in the 8 months or so i have had my tune and headers, they have both paid for themselves in fuel savings alone almost. they will be paid off in fuel savings within 1 year of having them.

Edit: For air pressure i am running 40 PSI all around. in my 285's i always ran 38 PSI.

    Re: 2004 Silverado MPG?

35 is what they should be you could run 40 maybe get a lil less resistance get closer to 50 as suggested your going to see the middle wearing out from them being bulged due to over inflation id run like 38 thats what i put in my moms burban and dads 1500
all i have to say about the cold air intake and exhaust and custom tune i have all that on my truck and it just makes me want to drive it harder and faster so i can listen to it (it is a bit faster) so id keep it bone stock if u want mileage
get a cover for the bed that does help

yes remember pressure is measured by area, not an amount of air. doesnt matter if you have 40's or 30's, 38 psi is 38 for either one although it seems like it would be saggin like hell

    Re: 2004 Silverado MPG?

Thanks to everyone for you’re replies, I forgot to mention that the truck dose have a cover on it.

I will be looking into an economy tune.

With going to a CAI and better flowing exhaust what I noticed on my Harley is that when I put a high flow air filter, free flowing exhaust and rejetted the carb I actually lost MPG.
Maybe it was because I was always on the throttle though.

    Thanks Jeff.

The best was the mesh webbing tail gate.
