Nah, definitely a 475. It is a beefed up 400 with straight cut gears. But that's all I know. Looking for an education on this so I can build the best 400...gp

I know they had a drum type parking brake on the output shaft as well.

    Re: th475

yes, the Th475 DOES exist...it's simply a Th400 with spur gears (straight cut) and heavier sprags/internals...very tough transmission. outside, it's pretty much indistinguishable from a Th400...just basically a noisier Th400...

    Re: th475

The tranny came in small dump trucks and that kind of market. Parts will actually interchange but its been awhile since I've seen one so I could be a little wrong with that. Had a buddy that ran 11s in a 84 Pontiac Grand Prix using this tranny hooked to a 400 small block. Don't recall him ever having problems with it. Do remember it would break your neck when it shifted at WOT

    Re: th475

they came in the most HD applications. RVs got them, dump trucks, tow trucks...really HD stuff. IIRC none of the C/K light duty trucks ever got them.

and no, even the military trucks only had Th400s. not sure why they did, but they did...

Yea usually anything that had the Tall Deck medium duty truck 366/427 and did not run the Allison had the TH475.

Stuff like 3/4 and 1 tons and from what I've seen the oldschool bread trucks from like 71 on...gp

Don't think they had the Allison for this kind of application back then. If they did that would be just as sweet.gp

Most of those are Allison AT545 transmissions. Those are 4 speed with 4th gear being direct drive or 1:1 ratio. The later versions had a hydraulically controlled converter lockup in 4th gear. They are beyond rugged.

wow, a trailer tow package with 2.73s? GM did some ignorant things back then...like my '83 K1500 with 31" tall tires (factory size-optional tires), a 305, 700R4 and 2.73s in the pumpkins...it was so slow i think it's still somewhere trying to hit 60.

That sounds as ignorant as my 1983 G20 Van, haha. 305, 700r4, 3.08s with 29" tall tires. It only weighed 5,500 lbs.

As far as the TH475 goes. It was introduced in 1971 for BIG trucks. IIRC, it has a 2.75 first gear ratio.
