Air Intake from O'Reilly

Has anyone ever put together their own cold air intake with parts from O'Reillys? I saw in the store where they had the tube and filter and some other parts. Thought I might give it a shot considering it looked like it would be alot cheaper than buying a brand name kit.

Found this. Would it be worth the extra money to get something else like K&N.

Essentially, aftermarket intakes can be broken down into two groups:

-Metal
-Plastic

Metal is cheaper and more readily available, but will soak up heat. Plastic is less available and costs a bit more but reduces intake temperature over the metal variety. the design is simple for any intake. It's to get the air into the engine with minimal obstructions or changes.

Also, most generic intakes fail to produce much more power due to cheap filters. Buying a cheap intake and sticking a high quality filter is probably your best bet. That's been my experience with them in the Honda world. I wouldn't go with a pipe much larger than the throttle body bore diameter as well.

The spectre kits are cheap, but seem to be well constructed. So i say it's a safe bet. Just don't expect a major bump in power. It's more sound than anything. it won't make a lick of difference until the engine can exhale better or is tuned for it. The key to true power is balance in every sense of the engine. Balancing the intake and exhaust sizes accordingly, while taking into account your valve size, overlap, cam lift, BSFC, fuel pressure, etc.
