I have a big block 454 engine, the casting numbers are: 14015445, what I'm trying to do is find out of the engine is a tall deck or short deck.

Everywhere I have looked just lets me know what year it is.

I don't believe the 454 came in a tall deck... someone may prove me wrong though.

I'm pretty sure just the 427 and 366 came in the tall deck variety. That being said tho you could make one from a 427 if that's what your after

Do you know what this motor came out of?All big blocks that came in trucks were tall deck I think.
Big blocks in cars had standard deck heighth.

It's very easy to tell just by looking at the front of the block. If it's a short deck block the top water pump bolt holes are very close to the deck on the block. If it's a tall deck block there is a little space between the top water pump bolt holes and the deck.

If you're unsure what it should look like just find a motor (in or out of a car) that you know is either a tall or short deck and compare it to the one you've got.

Once you've seen the difference you can ID a tall or short deck BBC with a quick glance at the front of the block.

    Edit:

I did a quick picture search and came up with these two pics (not the best pics, but you get the idea). Look at the water pump bolt holes on these two blocks...

    Short deck block (9.8" deck)...

    Tall deck block (10.2" deck)...

all big blocks in light trucks 10/20/30 1500/2500/3500, etc. were short decks. the tall deck blocks were available in only medium duty trucks, and only available in 366ci and 427ci versions. no tall deck 454 was ever offered.

At the bottom of the list. It's a short deck.
Looks like a couple 454 castings were offered with tall decks.

Is that good enough for you,Greasedog?Or would you prefer to settle this with a dance-off?

The GEN VII 8.1(496) is a tall deck block, as is the 572 crate engine.

dance if you like, my sources, which are in my experiences VERY accurate, and widely known and used say that the TWO casting numbers you're pointing out are a 427 tall deck block, and a short deck 454...

It came out a 1-ton dually, I don't remember what year it is because the people let us have the motor. Were building it for a rail dragster I have.

Re: Tall deck or short deck 454

It doesn't matter what you think it came out of, what year it is, or what you think the displacement is, if you want to know if it's a tall deck or short deck block see post number 5. End of story. I've been a big block Chevy fan for a very long time. The top water pump bolt holes will tell you if it's a tall deck block or short deck block in a heartbeat. All you have to do is look at it, it's very simple.

Edit: If you are still unsure, post a pic of the front of your block with the water pump off.
