So i have a 1995 chevy k3500 dually, single cab, 454, with only 62,000 miles..... super clean........My question is whats the best way to increase the horepower in this truck. it is also a manual and whenever i try to get on it, it's just slower than dirt. I really want to make this a faster truck... what do you recomend?

The TBI 454's are both cam choked, and the heads don't flow well either. Since it's a manual I'm tempted to say cam swap because you can go with a more aggressive cam without having as much stalling and tuning issues. The hard part with that would be getting it tuned right, not sure how hard that is on the TBI systems. I think you have to have a new eeprom based chip burned for it.

There are a lot of little things you can do like opening up the intake and exhaust, tuning, etc... that will help a little, but to make it 'fast,' -which is a relative term- you'd probably need heads and cam, or some manner of forced induction.

That's my take on it anyway.

Don't forget that 454 is having to haul almost 3 tons around - before you put any load on it.
Cam swap, go with something the old schoolers called an "RV" cam - they're well suited to towing and daily drivers.

Being you are so slow now, the only "Fast" you are going to see is forced induction without completely re-configuring most of the motor. Heads, cam, intake, 4 barrel carb(switch to of corse), custom tune, will help but I would say you still won't be all that fast.

I know something that made noticeable difference in my 93 suburban was advancing the timing about 4 degrees. Not it still isn't fast but it sure did liven it up a good deal. Good place to start then work on building or buying a turbo or super charger.

And why exactly should he switch to a "4 barrel carb"

I would switch to a 4 barrel carb because it would be easier then a bigger throttle body, I would think. Should cost less, make it much easier to tune, and I don't for see him making it "fast" on the stock throttle body. It just isn't going to flow enough air and fuel.

The advantages of switching to a carb would be to take the computer out of the equation. You are limited on what you can do with a TBI system and the computer. If he wanted to not worry about all the tuning, and wanted to put whatever size cam he wanted, or whatever heads he felt like, then a carb would be his best option. If he wanted to put a 600 HP motor in it with a carb, it would be no problem. Very hard to do that same thing and stick a TBI system on it without a lot of tunung and modifications if it can even be done. Some guys are old school and like the carb thing. I am one of them. Got sick of the engine light coming on, just because of an o2 sensor or something small. I switched to a carb, put in a pretty nasty little small block and I don't have to worry about a thing. It is just a matter of opinion or what you are use to really.

If I was him, I would start with an intake, tune, headers with full exhaust and see how it feels. Then he can get into the whole cam swap and better heads.

you want to make a 95 454 fast? first thing to do is pull it and put it in something lighter. if you want a fast truck, stop messing with a 1 ton dually, or stop messing with a gasoline engine.

as for switching to carb... the TBI is capable of much more than just a stock motor, and bigger TBI units are available. you're still not going to make a 3 ton + truck fast.

Re: how to make a '95 454 Fast?

You can make it fast but it would take tons of power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would think fast for this truck would be 14s in the 1/4. Right now it runs 20s?

I guess the point you bring up is, what does the op consider fast. Signifigantly faster then it is now, or fast for todays standards? Then he can determain what route to go.

Even if it is a 1 ton, it's a standard cab so I doubt it's all that heavy. Probably lighter than my crew cab and that moves pretty well.

its still a 6000# + truck... VERY heavy. add the rolling resistance of 2 extra wheels and tires on the back, and you've got a recipe for disappointment in the speed department.

Yours is also a newer truck with a newer style injection system and more aerodynamics than a brick(dont get me wrong,OBS=favorite body style).

I think he should try out some lower gears if he hasnt. Being a 454 i wouldnt think he worries about gas mileage. I dont remember reading if it was a 4x4 or not. If its a 2wd put in a t-56,if its a 4wd remove 2 wheel drives and add a t-56

Completely defeats the purpose of running a BB, IMO.

    OP,

You want a single cab dually, powered by an OBI 454? Stand alone fuel system, forced induction. Or as suggested, LSX swap.

fast generally means acceleration... why would you throw away a big block for a Gen III engine lacking in low end torque?

    You're right. I'll trade my torque-less 6.0 for the OP's 454. Sorry my 6.0 w/o low end torque.

    Cam+stall+6.0= No traction
    '95 C1500, LT's, 3200 stall, and some PCM tweaking
