    1995 4.3 Vortec Engine Swap -- HELP!

Support FSC and see no ads! - Click Here
So i have a 1995 Silverado Ext. Cab 2WD - 5 Speed manual. It was nearly 400k miles on it! It still runs pretty damn strong, but i want to use it to do some desert races in the near future. I have to drive it to a shop 6 hours away and i think im going to need to swap the engine so it can make the trip ( and because it's getting caged )

But im not sure what engine to get???

If i should get a 350, what parts would i need to swap?

What engine would be really good for the prerunning world? That would be a very reliable engine at the same time... ANY help is appreciated! Thanks

    As of right now im pretty sure i have the C1500 ohv V6 4.3 / 262 - 200 HP / 255 Torque ( because the 160 hp only came in 4 speed, mine is a 5 speed )

you have to decide what kind of racing you'll be doing...and build the proper engine. a nice, high revving, slightly modded Vortec 5.3-6.0 would probably work great, but even an old school 350-383 would work good...

Yeah i was thinking about a 350... But i cant find anything that has specifcs. All i know that its possible and that some people say no, the tranny wont bolt up, and some say it will but need a new flywheel... I dont know exactly what i need to swap for a 350....

350 would be a good engine for prerunning correct? and whats the MPG on the 350 vs 5.3?

don't listen to the idiots who say the transmission won't bolt up. ever heard the saying "the 4.3 is only a 5.7 with two cylinders chopped off"? guess what, its a true statement. you could rebuild a 4.3 using a 5.7 rebuild kit...you'd just have some left over parts. the 5.7 is a 90* V8, the 4.3 is a 90* V6. the transmissions for the two are exactly the same. the flexplates are exactly the same. the torque converter usually has a slightly higher stall for the 4.3, but not always. the motor mounts are the same. the engine wiring is the same...only have to have the proper PROM chip (can't remember if they still used PROM's in '95 or if the entire ECM has to be flashed) to properly run the 350, see where i'm going with this? it's all the same.

fuel mileage difference between the 5.3 and 5.7? honestly, its pretty comparable with the 5.3 edging out the 5.7 due to it being a more efficient engine...but they are really pretty close fuel economy wise.

A 5.7 swap is going to be way more manageable. You'll only need to change a few things here and there. A 5.3 is an LS engine requireing different or custom just about everything. No offense, I think an LS swap might be over your head if you're struggling with the tranny question and asking what a good prerunner motor is.

    '95 uses chips still
The op's engine uses balance shafts, a 120 degree crank with big rod journals, and CPI heads. 350 engines do not use any of those. You cannot use a 350 rebuild kit on a 262, way too many different parts.

Back to the question, I'd use a 355 or a 383. The swap has been covered several times. The 262 uses the same bellhousing pattern as Chevy V8s.
Guess if you want to be different a V6 could be used. But that requires more money to make that work and the engine would have to be more radical. A V8 would be simpler and cheaper. But if using a V6 is something you want to do, click on the link in my sig.

well, ok, i suppose the entire rebuild kit couldn't be used...i shouldn't have said that. my bad. but the pistons, rings, most bearings, oil pump and other things i'm probably missing could be used.

His engine is a TBI 4.3, not a CPI engine, nor a 1996+ CSFI engine. TBI Rating is 160hp approx. The CPI and CSFI engines are 190-200hp depending on application.

Do the TBI 4.3's use the CPI/CSFI heads?

Yup!, lol, still not as good as CSFI heads, but better then TBI heads, i believe they are about a 5-10HP improvement.

Other weird thing, my 1994 4.3L had a roller cam.

Pretty sure all TBI 262s use roller cams.

truthfully, not trying to stir the stuff...ALL 4.3s from 1985 on are considered "Vortec" engines...let me dig up the ad and i'll post it on here...and that's when they were 4bbl carb'd.

edit...found the ad, but for some odd reason my phone won't post pictures from the internet on this forum...so when i get back around Mike M. Pooter, i'll post it. it says in bold letters "announcing VORTEC V6"

Re: 1995 4.3 Vortec Engine Swap -- HELP!

Thanks alot for all the info guys, it helps alot! Im new to chevy engines... Coming from toyota, trying to get into a bigger and better truck. But i have decided im NOT going to be swapping for a 350, 355, nor 383. Id like to swap to a 5.3L, or is the 5.7 way more reasonable? Exact engine model helps alot too... Thanks alot

Re: 1995 4.3 Vortec Engine Swap -- HELP!

honestly, the most "reasonable" and easiest swap to make would be to install an 87-95 TBI 350 (5.7). its pretty much a direct bolt-in...almost the same as just bolting in another 4.3. with a 5.3, you're gonna go through hell trying to sort out the wiring, unless you are really talented in that department. a good TBI 350 with a few mods would give you plenty of punch and would be easiest to do.

Oh so the 350 is a 5.7? Never knew that lol... Thanks. And what few mods might that be?

Re: 1995 4.3 Vortec Engine Swap -- HELP!

yep, that's why i typed that together like that, so you'd see that the 5.7 you were referring to WAS, in fact, the 350. it's always been that way, even with th gen 1 carb'd 350s. as for mods? well, adding a set of ported/polished Vortec heads would give you pretty good bang for your buck, then put a nice (healthy, not too big though) cam in it. you could put 454 injectors in it and have a custom PROM chip (ECM chip) burned to take advantage of the modifications. also, a set of LT headers and a well-flowing exhaust is a must.

just those mods would give you a pretty healthy 350...
