4.56 or 4.88.
spools are not for street use.
gears require experience to install properly or help from someone who has done it before.
richmond, motive gears are good. get a trutrac locker for the rear.

I wanted to do upgrade my gears in my truck. I have 3.73 gears in the truck now i think and i need a re gearing. i have no more punch rolling on the big rubber. I didn't know if i should go with the 4.10 or 4.56. It is a daily driver and it sees its fair share of mud. I do also drive interstate a little. i just want the best of both worlds. I'm trying to get more MPG out of this guzzler but i also want to go when i want it to go. Are Gears hard to change? should i just go to a shop? what brand should i get? and would it be a bad idea to put a spool in the front so i can have true 4WD?

What he said, all of it.
No way you could spool your front diff, one, the diff would never survive, and two, with a central axle disconnect in the diff you wouldn't be able to steer, even in 2wd.
4.56's get my vote.

what rpm would the engine be running say around 70-80mph. whats a good locker for the front thats not really expensive?
2300rpm@75mph. If you think higher rpm=bad mpg, it isn't the case. It's all about how hard the engine is being worked.
There are no locker options for 8.25IFS, is the housing is aluminum, it dies often enough in an open set-up, lockers or limited slip would be death in seconds.
Do some searching, I don't think you even know how your front diff works at this point.
I know it works i use it all the time. damn so the only way i can get true four wheel drive is a solid axle swap???? if so how much does that run?
4.56 gears. I used premium Yukon gears in my Tahoe and they were really nice. Very quiet and very strong. I also endorse the TrueTrac.
No locker options for the 8.25" IFS and you wouldn't want to try. It would scatter like a handful of marbles. If you're in a place where you really want a front locker, look at doing a solid axle swap.

I have a 2000 silverado Z-71, I have a few bolt ons and a custom tune, I blew my rear end a part and was looking to do a gear swap also. I took my truck to twisted off road here where I live. Im running 305-65-17 which is closer to a 33in tire than 32in. I did a 4.10 swap with a detroit tru-track. MPG went up a little. For the most part Im where I need to be gear wise. I drive 550 miles every couple weeks and truck is allways pepy. RPMs went up bout 200-300RPM, They told me 4.10 is a great gear for my driving, For more off road go with a 4.56, Or if I ran 35in tires do a 4.56, twisted said on my truck 4.10 will up my cruzing revs 200RPM and 4.56 would do bout 4to6 hundred more. I opted out on the 4.56 cause I wanted more MPGs but kinda wish I would have done them when im cruzin round town in stop and go traffic. Hope this helps out some
4.88's get my vote. i still want more "punch", and it still kicks in/out of OD quite a bit for my liking.

bootlife if you dont mind me asking how much did it cost for all of that??
LOL dont ask, The rear axle was a total loss so I had to replace it, I got all name brand parts, seals, bearings, gears, and so on. came close to 2000 after tax. if your just doing gears and a tru-track you should be able to do it parts and labor for around 1000. Also I was told the eaton tru-track has had some problems, not sure what tho. so thats why I did the Detroit. But im pretty sure there made by the same people. They just told me to stay away from the eaton.
Mine only kicks out when I go up the 7% grade hill in west tx. Wonder if it has something to do with you altitude? I had some troubles when I had the trinity programmer, and I got around 2500 feet, But I bumped up the spark advance an took care of it.
