Well I attempted the "Home Depot Mod" as I've heard it called.
My question is I toyed with the thermostatic air cleaner, is the name of it I think. It's the butterfly valve in the air cleaner housing that sucks the hot air off the manifolds. I put a baby screw under it to keep it open, without having to take it completely out. Do I need to plug the hole under it? For now I just left the flexible hose attached and the hole unplugged, would it hurt anything if I left it like that?
thanks

Come on Quyonmob, I know you wanna answer this, we were just talking about this the other day.
Looks fine, wrapping some kind of heat insulation around it won't hurt. Keeping the butterfly open and plugging off the heat riser hose opening are the two goals of that mod.

I removed the valve and its assembly completely from mine. Covered the hole with dynamat.

Took everything off and I already had it plugged. Talk about embarrassing![]()
wow that looks like alot of work and ugly as ****..... why didnt you just flip the air cleaner lid upside down? if you just turn it upside down you get way more airflow, no ugly dryer machine pipes and you dont have to worry about that lil valve thing inside the cleaner or have to run that lil heat pipe at the bottom.
OP, check around in junkyards for the full OE piece without the silencer box to connect the air cleaner housing to the fender, might be a little cleaner looking than the stovepipe, but you've got the idea down.
For the thermostatic air cleaner, I just drilled out the rivets, removed it, and covered the hole with a piece of sheet metal sealed with a little epoxy and some rivets.
More air? You mean the same amount of now hot air. This isn't forced induction, the engine only breathes as much as the engine can breathe. Same intake feeds a 7.4L.
No wait, now it says ROAAAR when you step on the pedal so you definitely made power.![]()

yes roar!!!! all that really matters when you install a dollar store intake is the million+ hp it delivers to your now 1,000,132 hp engine right? pop a wheelie, better yet do a backflip. you got all the hp you need for 99 cents.
as for more air flow..... im sorry i should have said "less restrictive airflow".
as far as hot air in the engine bay...... how many classic v8's suffer this problem running an open aftermarket air cleaner? get real this is obviously not a high performance motor so "hot air" is gonna have little to no effect on his performance.
btw dont drive your truck today its gonna be HOT
Hot in Oregon?

And the trolls come out...
Yes some trucks just had a collapsing pipe. The engine will make less power with that hot air, regardless of what it makes stock.

From the time I got home from the hardware store it literally took 5mins to do everything. Also who cares how "ugly" it is, it's not like its a show truck that I show my engine off all the time. Why the hell would I flip the lid?, that would be worthless, I would have to start changin the filter all the time because I travel gravel/ dirt roads all the time.
