I just ordered pro version to start playing around with several vehicles I own the first one will be my 99 k3500 7.4 truck. I am not sure were to start learing what I am doing. I would like to change the convertor lockup speed so it will not keep unlocking and locking at 55mph. I also want to change the PE timer which another member has told me about. I also want to change the temp to turn on the aux towing fan. Please any tips and tricks to make sure I am doing this right would help.

I own the same software for my 2003 S10 Vortec. I won't lie... You will have to do a lot of reading. I would start with the tutorials HP Tuner offers on their website. Also, I would buy a book on how EFI works so that you understand how the computer thinks, and which sensors are primary and which are secondary. Changing things with the PE might cause other issues to pop up immediately. I have probably about 120hrs of research and reading into mine. I also have about 50 hours or programming time and learning how it affects my truck. I have 15 years as a computer tech and programmer, and the automotive stuff is an animal in itself. However, you will not regret learning this stuff. It will make you appreciate the power of the technology you are working with. Good luck.

Reading is a definite must. I own HPtuners as well and use the software to spray nitrous on my '04 Cavalier and have tweaked 3 GM trucks. After paying 5 bills for HPT and charging to tweak 3 trucks HPT only cost me $100 and I get to keep the interface. So far I start with removing all of torque management, adjust the fan temp, figure out how and how hard I want the trans to shift and lockup the converter, give it just a lil bit more fuel, then tune for knock. Tuning is very tricky I have a friend who owns a performance shop and has attended the HPT classes in Dallas and still everyday you learn more and more. I am no "tuner" but know enough to wake up a motor and adjust for a lil juice. Also lookup CPig's HPtuners tuning guide on google helps out alot.

It's not something you can just learn...it takes alot of time and reading. Frankly you're on the wrong forum for these questions.

Thanks I got it and printed I am going to read it shortly. I should have my programmer here shortly and is there any good respiratory sites for tunes other than the one I am finding on hp forum. I just hope they are really decent to maybe try to start with then tune from there.

As far as I know no tunes other than the HPT repository. But you could start a thread on the HPT forum and maybe someone can help you with a start up tune that works well. Remember that if you borrow a tune that some of the settings for that particular vehicle might be different than yours because of environment variables. You can start by going into the repository and find a tune thats for you truck and in the comments look for stuff like Torque managment disable, shift points changed, and simple things like that to start. Dont just go all out and copy and paste a tune from a borrowed hpt file, because serious damage could occur or your truck could run like ass. The HPT forum is very willing to help you if you post your tune.
