Well as a winter project i am thinking that i will build a 350. I want to build it so I always have power to spare and i wont have to downshift everytime I see a hill like I do to my 305 what combinations would you people recomend for the engine, cam ,valves, ect i do mostly road driving but a lil off roading what do u think the best setup is and about how much money am I looking at. The motor i am geting just had bearings put into the bottom end so its had some work but should make a good project motor. Also what about doing a carborator instead of tbi what size should i get and also what exaust i need to keep the exaust quite due to the fact its illegal here in NH but still get decent power gains

    where to start...
the engine you are getting just had bearings put in it...
align honed or bored? plasti-gaged what clearance?
downshifting because of lack of power or maladjusted transmission?
what RPM is this downshift happening?
what gear ratio/tire height in the rear?
    stock injector system?
if using a carbuetor the sizing depends on size and rpm level.
    a 355 @ 6000rpm needs a minimum of 650cfm @ WOT.

Wow you can build a 350 sooo many ways... A carb is of course old, cheap, tech. that anybody can learn to tune but whats the fun in that? And you will lose gas mileage most likely.

I'm figuring that you don't want to spend a hell of a lot so I would say get a prepped long block 350 or 355 with a 4 bolt main, stock crank is fine, GM rods are fine, ARP bolts, with Vortec heads, 1.5 or 1.6 roller rockets(Crane and Comp. are both good), if possible financially get a hydraulic roller valvetrain... then you can slap whatever be it carb, TBI, LT1, or aftermarket EFI that you want on there.

Yes I would like to do it on a budget. But i will do what it takes. well i have a standard tran and when doing up even a smaller hill i will have to downshift cause it just wont make it up. I would prolly take it and rebuild the engine bore it out high comp pistons. Im wondering what cam what intake ect... what would you recomend? Also how hard and expensive to put efi onto it?
