What would be the best choice for a new carb on a 1988 Chevy 350? I'm looking for take off speed when I want to get into it and then while I'm driving just to drive what will get me the best gas mileage?

Jet AFPR
TBI heads
Comp 12-388-4(260H)cam

I bought the truck and it has a crab on it. I just want to do some performance upgrades to it.
Call and talk to Cliff, he can point you in the right direction, or, he may even have something on the shelf.

look into smi carbs for a quadrajet.
since you wanted gas mileage.
what cam is in it?
headers?
intake?

Are you positive it is a carb? A lot of people think TBI is a carb.

^^Many may laugh or shake their heads but it's true.
Like the guys are saying the Q-Jet is king-carb for power & mileage.
carb, good gas milege, and good power do not belong in a sentence together, specialy when talking about a 4x4.( unless your going with a 2 barrel, and a 150 shot) lol
i disagree, thats what qjets were designed for, fuel economy when your puttin around and power when you lay into. i pulled a 14mpg avg from az to wy in my truck doin 70. and still have good power. just dont expect fuel economy when your foot is planted. qjet is king for a DD 4x4 IMO

76 k10, edel performer cam, headers, polished 1.72 heads, factory aliminum intake, modded qjet. butt dynoed at 200hp. sm465, np205, dana 44, 12bolt. (as i walk thru the valley of rice, I shall fear no turbo, for torque art side) disturbing the peace since 1991
Holley 4150 series 600cfm vaccum secondary. When tuned in i've pulled 20+MPG with a mild small block.

**Flat Broke Racing**
1989 Chevy RCSB Stepside, 427 LSX block, PT106 turbo, Lenko 6spd Manual, Moser M9 rear, tube chassis, full cage, NBS front clip, rear step shavers, Zo6 seats, A/C, 1050hp street tune and daily drivable!
My vote will got to the Edelbrock 600, much cheaper to buy, and tune than a Q-jet, and the back two barrels open much better that the vacuum holley. I am getting about 17 to 18 mpg with my 94 Z-71.
Good luck with your choice.

Get a Predator carburetor!
I'm just kidding, they are giant toilet bowls of fuel that are just designed to go WOT.
I had an off the shelf Edelbrock 600cfm that got me between 15mpg around down, and once on a highway road trip I squeezed 25mpg from it. It still delivered decent power.
