Tried the whole rebuild thing, turns out 'm good at makin' motors crank, but suck at building carbs. I need either a re-man, or a brand new one. The only reason I want a Q-Jet back on my truck is the tiny primaries and secondaries I could drive my truck through.

    Re: Need a good Q-Jet

What is the carb doing that you say it needs to be replaced?

A q-jet isn't that hard to rebuild assuming all of the parts are good. Do a Google search and you will turn up a few helpful links when rebuilding to repair common failures. Debending on what it's doing after rebuild it could be a few issues.

I have also ran into a few that had warped top plates, no way to rebuild that and get a good running engine no matter how hard you try.

Check out these links for some helpful tips:

My dad took the truck to a "mechanic" a long time ago, he said it was worn out, and plopped a $400 Edelbrock on there, and the carb is basically a piece of ****. And I just can't get those damned needles, or whatever they are, to line up properly.

Holley, my friend. It makes the world go 'round.

And I've heard the opposite about Q-Jets, that they are quite tricky to rebuild. I've never tried one, though.

Carbs are like women...all different shapes and sizes. Men generally prefer the ones they have the most luck with. When dialed in, the Q-jet is the absolute best street carb in existence. SMI makes a pretty mean Qjet if you want one to just bolt on and go.

I'd go with a Holley, but I don't want a baggie of gaskets hangin' off my rear-view, besides, If I buy a re-man,I've got about 8 cores I could send 'em, and get the carb relatively cheap.

Just looked up SMI, I think that's what I'll go with, 325 ain't bad for a good carb.

I use www.customrebuiltcarbs.com. Phil is the owner and calls you personally for your input. I've had two electronic ones done by him and both were great right out of the box, check him out.

I would email Lars Grimsrud at v8fastcars@msn.com He lives in Colorado and is a quadrajet expert. Google search his name.

    Re: Need a good Q-Jet

Got my carb from SMI, am EXTREMELY happy with it. Unfortunately used a HOLLEY before that, and will never use one again. Piece of **** caught my truck on fire. Had to replace main engine harness, repair several smaller harnesses, replaced the dizzy, replace valve pan gaskets, and intake gaskets. And fix a few other things.
