Hi. My 1986 C 10 4.3 is struggling under load. I have owned this one week. When I got it, idled very low and smooth, accelerated slow but sure, but flooring the pedal produced no response. Still got me from A to B so it was OK. I added Seafoam to the tank, and sprayed the carb with Berryman. Now when I shift into reverse it shakes alot, and will stall out when slowing to a stop, turning, etc. I'm regretting messing with it. If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it, I feel like i'm overlooking something obvious. Thanks!

    Re: carb rough under load

Sounds more like an ignition problem to me.

    Checked timing? Checked timing advancing?

    What carb is on it?

I'm assuming the 4.3L of that ERA would be a HEI distributor with the coil in the cap?

I haven't checked timing yet because it cruised fine when I got it, but I'll check that this weekend. I read somewhere that holding a hand over the carb might clean out the passageways. I tried it: the rpms increased and it just about stalled out- and my hand got wet with gas. Should I start with the timing before I go any further? Thanks again.
Its a 4 barrel Quadrajet, not sure of the model number

Sounds like something to do with the distributor.
And you may have fouled your spark plugs. There's also the possibilty of a clogged filter.

    Re: carb rough under load

I'll try new plugs tonight. Checked alot of vaccuum lines after getting the manual from the library. There is no belt on the A.I.R. pump, don't know how essential that is. I would prefer to just rip it all out and cap off the ports, screw the ozone! (just kidding). But the AC and cruise doesn't work, the A.I.R. pump isn't running, I don't know how much worse it could get anyway. I'm not going to mess with it though, because of Murphy's Law. Is there a way to tell if a specific plug is not firing besides holding it against the block to check for spark?

I'm focusing on something the manual calls the speed actuator. It is a vaccuum activated plunger bolted onto the carb. Do these go bad? The vaccuum line comes from a block that has two wires connected to it. Is there a way to test this? I can work the plunger manually, but I don't know that it's working when it should be. Thanks

well, changed the power steering compensator solenoid, changed the plugs, checked the timing, cleaned out the egr, capped all the vacuum, removed fuel filter, checked fuel pressure, switched to manifold advanced, cleaned out the low idle circuit, checked Qjet solenoid, Armor All'd the tires and now she runs great! Thanks for all the help everyone you really helped me out here.
