I decided on the l31 to rebuild, that way i can still drive my truck while new engine is being built. I read that i should use l05 timing cover and water pump. I wanted make sure what parts to use before i got started, now just have to get it done.

This is a discussion on L31 or L05 which one to rebuild within the Engine Swaps forums, part of the Performance category; I am going to rebuild one of these blocks for my 95 tbi. I bought a complete 96 vortec 350 ...
I am going to rebuild one of these blocks for my 95 tbi. I bought a complete 96 vortec 350 and was going to rebuild it, but now i am thinking of just rebuilding my L05 and just using the vortec heads and a roller cam. I know some of the parts used on the 96 block are different, so thats why i thought about just rebuilding my L05 block. What block would be my best bet. Both have high miles and run. I know that the water pump and timing cover are different and will use a vortec carb manifold with adaptor for tbi.

after dropping engine off at machine shop i was informed one of the heads were cracked, and and a tab where tranny bolts to block was cracked. Machine shop had a good block so i just decided to buy that block even though it needs to have holes for lifter spider tapped for roller cam. Now i need to find a set of heads. anyone ever tried pbm thunder heads by world products? The machine shop sells them and said they are like a stock vortec head.
machine shop called and said engine is done. i will be picking it up after i get off work wed. now i need to get new fuel pump and bigger tbi. i went with iron eagle 180cc heads didnt want aluminum. it is a 383 and i have an ebl to tune it with. been tuning stock engine now and truck runs better than before. it will take some time to get it running right with my tuning skills but i know i will be happy when i get it done.
i am getting the rest of my parts needed to do swap. i need to get new distributor gear a melonized one, bigger injectors 68 lb , prolly a 46mm throttle body, a performer intake with tbi adapter and lots of time tuning with my ebl. will start swap in mid july.
got a ep381 fuel pump and was going to install it yesterday when i had alot of bad luck getting lines off. they were rusted so bad they broke when i started to loosen them, now have to buy new sending unit and new lines. i thought that they could break and i was right. i hope that rest of swap goes better than this.
got new pump and sending unit in also new lines done. tt-1 wideband came today will install it this weekend. also picked up performer rpm manifold. install should start in a couple more weeks.
Keep us updated on the swap. I have a 95 K1500 with a 4.6 that I want to drop a 5.7 in but I don't want a stock 190hp motor. Living in CA I have to be consertive on the smog stuff.
Get some pics man! ;) You were by yourself in your own thread for a while there![]()

It should run alot better than my tired 350 with 275000 miles on it, but it still runs good. i put a hp dana 44 in the front and added 5.13 gears with 35 in tires, 14 bolt in rear. the gear swap made a huge impact. i need to buy adapter plate for intake and a melonized gear for distributor yet. then the swap will begin. tranny will be next, it prolly wont last.
I have an Xtreme Energy in mine too... went to a local performance parts shop in Tucson and he called a friend at a machine shop, said the OE-style roller cams work with the stock distributor. 15 or 20k and so far no issues :)

just ordered my distributor gear and carb to tbi adaptor plate. might be able to start swap this weekend if everything goes as planned.
Just remember TBI engines use 0º initial advance, everything is controlled via computer. You can run more initial if you really want to, and change the setting in the EBL, but I don't think it's necessary. 0º will allow the engine to start easier.

thanx for the info i was wondering where to set it at. i will have to change settings in my ebl for new motor and that will take me a while to do but im ready to do it.
You still set the timing as you do a stock TBI engine, unplug the EST wire... tan w/ black stripe. Mine is where the fuel pump relay, etc. is on the firewall under the plastic wiring cover (if your truck still has it).

my timing will be set at 0 with wire disconnected and on my ebl i will have to adjust other areas when i start tuning my 383 and that will take me some time because im still learning. started pulling old engine tonite. have to modify throttle brackets a little i have a performer rpm manifold i also need to relocate some other things like brake booster vacume fitting on intake overall not going to bad
