Howdy all - Looking to simply replace stock muffler with aftermarket...either Magnaflow or Flowmaster 50 SUV....irrelevent to my question, though. Question is: To cut off the existing muffler and install the new one with a single turn-down, what kind of clamp will I need between the new muffler and the existing exhaust pipe? I am trying to avoid the $100+ fee the muffler shops will charge me to weld it on. I think the "band" style clamps look the best, but will the stock pipe be a butt-end fit or slip-fit over the muffler opening? I see they sell clamps for butt-end joints or slip-fit joints. I can't wait till the muffler is cut off to determine how the new muff and pipe join together. Thanks for any input!

Your 04 SHOULD have a 2 3/4" exhaust system on it from the factory. I don't know if they make a band style clamp that goes 2 3/4" to 3". I am assuming that you are purchasing a 3" inlet/outlet muffler for your rig. Flomaster, Magnaflo, and many other companies offer a 3" "cat-back" system for you application. With it, you just unbolt the tail pipe from the y-pipe beside the transmission on the passanger side of the trans. The kit will include a new pipe and muffler with all of the goodies to hang it and clamp it together. If you want a muffler only, you will most likely need to get a piece of pipe made to get you from the 2 3/4" stock pipe to 3" inlet of the muffler. Most exhaust shops have a machine that "stretch" the pipe to slip over the other. Hope this helps!
