i have an 03' chevy 5.3L and I have true duals with 2.5 piping and flowmasters and it runs good.i had to pipes going out the rear and it was QUIET!!! i couldnt figure it out??dual flows and quiet.so i cut off the tail pipes the other day and it was a night and day difference!!!!it so much beefier and deep sounding.plus i noticed a small difference in th eway it ran.those tail pipes really restricted the truck.not much extra cab noise neither.so i suggest no tail pipes.sacrafice looks for performance and sound.
ANY engine builder will tell ya 2.25" for true duals from a stock-mild small block for the best mix of HP/torque. You will probably pick up some HP at high RPMs with 2.5" duals, but you will lose low end torque, which is more important in a truck.
I went 2.5" duals on a stock small block and COMPLETELY regretted it for the low end torque I lost... My computer even kept throwing codes after that.

I went with dual 2.5inch. Which as i now know, was way over kill for a 305. I went from a single 2inch to dual 2.5, it probly changed my power curve alot, but there is alot more power there. the ends justify the means. upside is i wont have to go replacing tha exhaust piping, cats, or mufflers if i ever decide to get a larger small block.

That exactly what they told me,when it was time to build the exhaust on my truck 350tbi 325hp told me I would have more pull[torque] with the 2 1/4" piping. I wish I could put bigger on to see what the differnece is,but you gotta trust the experts. I recomend 2 1/4" for true duals.Originally Posted by Redz Z

I have 3" running back to two series 40 flowmasters and then 2.5" all the way out the back. I did notice a small loss in low end torque but not too much. My gas mileage in town did not change, so the change could not have been too much.
I have the 7.4L engine so results may be a bit different. If I had the smaller engine I would use 2.25" without hesitation.

ok so the 2.5 would be too big. Anyone here look at the dynomax ultraflow X it is one muffler 2 in 2 out. not true duals but in a sense it is. Soo what mods would enable the 2.5 to run a peak? we talking cam, injectors, tune. or we talkin intake and maybe hypertech? I'm sure everyone is tired of hearing me talk about this but I dont wanna have exhaust that I have to change down the road if I decide to run some more mods. and realistically we are talking about 4ft of piping difference most run 3in to dual 2.5 out now all im doing is adding 2inch of pipe diameter total to about 3 1/2 to 4 feet of pipe before the muffler. I'm just not grasping the concept i guess.
I'm curious to see what everybody says. I'm considering that same muffler, and want to have room for more upgrades like an intake and programming.
I don't pluck, I don't moisturize, and the only thing I wax is my car!
well here's the sound the dynomax ultraflow X makes. IMO blows everything outta the water

I'm going to go with either 2.75 or 3 inch ID pipes. Commonly available pipe sizes, easy for purchase and repair.
Stupid move for a stock (minor cam upgrade and a K&N...biiig whoop) 350 TBI, right? Well, when combined with the long tubes and Y pipe that will be put in next spring, there will also be a 383 put in with vortec heads, with lift numbers around 480 to 500 ish, and hopefully a twin screw after I get out of college.
Spend the money and do it once for the overall plan, less money and time wasted re-doing it all later on.
And for simplicity's sake, I doubt I'll go with a true dual setup.
