Judging from what you want, I would point you in the self-installed cat-back kit. There is a lot of manufacturers to choose from but if you just want something better than stock without getting too loud, then you might want to stay away from a system that incorporates a loud muffler, like a flowmaster or something with a straight through design. Do some google searches on Dynomax, Gibson, Borla, etc.

I've got a Flowmaster SSE (single side exit) system on mine, I believe it has the 40 series muffler on it (the system came with the truck). I find that it has a subdued growl while idling and under light acceleration. But it sure does roar when I put my foot into it.

Flowmaster also makes a kit with the 50 series muffler in it, which quietens it down a bit (in their words, "Mild Performance Tone"), with all the same performance as the 40 series.

I am going with a Flowmaster catback on my 06 4.8. I like the more agressive sound. Personally I think nothing beats the sound of a Flowmaster.

I got a Super 40 back when it first came out, because I wanted to hear my stereo over the exhaust. It's si/so dumped under the bed, nice and quite til you step on it. But now I need to change it up a little so I can hear my exhaust over the tires again.

I agree. Growing up I always thought the GM small block w/ flowmasters sounded great. I rarely hear that low galloping rumble anymore, mostly just annoying fart mufflers and Mustangs that aren't tuned.
