the exhaust is starting to show age and will be leaking within the next few years.

I was wondering if there are any custom fit exhaust systems for my 4.3L V-6.

I want to retain the factory y-pipe and O2 sensor, and I could care less what happens to the cat. (aka makes no difference either way)
i want little noise, only want noise at WOT, pulling hard, etc. I want it really quiet at idle and cruising.

Doubt i can find an exhaust like this but who knows?

    any input appreciated!

most of those kits are rediculously over priced. Just go to a muffler shop and have them do it for probably $100 less after labor. If you want something quiet at cruise and idle, but noticeable at WOT, get a magnaflow muffler. I'd say you're probably going to want at least an 18" long case to keep it almost dead-quiet. A lot of shops these days are using stainless tubing. Also, remember that your cat will keep things quieter too so maybe you should hold onto that. The stock y pipe and manifolds suck (especially if you're looking for a stainless system), but keep `em if that's what you're after. By the way, any pre-packaged cat-back system should work fine if it's for your year of truck. It's pretty much the same for a v6 or sb v8. For the life of me though, I can't understand why GM put a v6 in a longbed pickup.

sadly they even put it in a 3/4 ton. (probably light 3/4 ton but i am not sure)

Anyway, i may not stay with the stock y-pipe itself, but i want to stay factory style w/ the 02 bung. The y-pipe looks similar to the one in dad's 98 5.7L chassis cab, so theoretically, w/ the smaller engine, the y-pipe is not restrictive.

I am also thinking that an exhaust going straight out the back will be better than side exit as far as restriction goes.

Single Chambers... Loud as hell when you want them to be. Quiet but you can still hear them when you are going down the highway and they drone aint that bad neither. I think single chambers are the best muffler made IMO

a v6 revs quicker than a v8 though so you could also say that opening it up a bit would improve overall performance. Then again, a v8 may benefit more. Either way, magnaflow makes a decent one. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...view=32&N=700+ for an obd2 vortec style like your dad's. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku for obd1 tbi style like your's. Both are mandrel bent and stainless steel. The tubing is slightly larger than stock, but still on the small side so you may benefit more than a v8. Personally, I'm running the edelbrock y pipe, but the tubing might be larger than what you're looking for.

the one you say for the v-6 doesn't look right, claims 1994-1995
but the V8 vortec one looks Perfect! i will keep the Vortec one in mind for old man's truck. 200K on it, so the exhaust will go sometime.

while the V6 may rev a little quicker than a V8, due to lower rotational mass, you are forgetting one thing... torque. if your logic was correct, we'd all be swapping in 4 cyls with 8" exhaust.

the factory y pipe is terribly restrictive. anything you can do to free it up will help. Summit Racing makes a cat back kit that will work for you.

When my brother had his 1990 chevy 1500. He had trouble finding exhaust. So I went to a junk yard and looked and took measurements off a 1990 with a 350 v8. And the cat and everything measured the same. Same location. So he order his exhaust off pacesetter.com for a 1990 chevy 350. And when it was delivered. We bolted it up to the 4.3. There was no modifying or nothing. It was a single cat-back exhaust system and sounded ok for a 6 banger.
