Ok, so I just put on two original flowmaster 40's on my 5.7 tahoe. It was put on yesterday and I got the tips angled at pretty much a 45 out the back on either side. So it's basically a true dual setup without cutting the cats. I was bummed because I can't hear the exhaust at all driving. It's hardly any louder than my stock muffler. It's pretty decently loud on the outside. Will it get louder on the inside as the mufflers are "broken in"?

    this bothers you????

I cut my drone-master 50 series off and got a magnaflow because the drone and rumble inside the cab made people not want to ride with me. Try dumping it under the bed, you'll be sure to hear it then. And flowmasters get a lot louder over the first couple hundred miles, doesnt make sense and I dont know why but they do.

Chamber mufflers are quite when they are first installed. It took my Thrush welded muffler about a month to get loud. But I'm going to go back to a glasspack because I want it louder.

With a catted exhaust and 2 mufflers it's not going to be very loud especially at first. Once they break in and you still want it louder then remove the cats and see how you like it. At that point it should be loud enough for you. If not, then you might want to sell the mufflers and go with a di/do and run 1 muffler on a catless exhaust, that should be plenty loud enough for you.

Re: Can't hear my new flowmasters

yeah, it is all true, i had the same deal. I got my flowmaster 40 about a month ago, but its a delta flow which is supposed to be quieter inside. I got a lot louder in a couple hundred miles inside and out. When i first put it in, it was barely louder than the stock muffler. Give it time, it will get louder. As for the inside, mine is slightly louder at all rpms, but at 1600 and like 2400 or so it really resonates. Like they said, be careful, it could get annoying. I also have stock cat which im sure makes it much quieter than it could be.

Yeah, be careful what you wish for in flowmasters. We had two in our 1966 383 stroker drag truck, and it droned so bad, it rattled your teeth. We had those blowmasters replaced with dynomax bullets and it is MUCH louder on the outside, but does not drone at all, if any.

I have Flowmaters 40 and they have probably close to 30,000 miles on them and one day I just noticed they seem to be getting louder. I also have two mufflers and stock cats.

Re: Can't hear my new flowmasters

Yall think it drones bad inside? Try having no cat or muffler exit directly under the cab, now that's bad. I drove with ear muffs made for viewing Nascar races and the windows up all the time so I wouldn't go deaf. After running my truck for months like that I think having a Flowmaster 40 dumped before the axle with no cat won't be too loud for me.

Try waiting a week for your Magnaflow to come in the mail, and driving with longtubes to dual 2.5" exhaust y'd to a single 3" stopping at the axle. Suprisingly little drone at highway speeds, but unlock it in 4th going up a hill and you don't stand a chance if a cop goes by the other way.

The '66 has no cats, 3ft of piping to blowmasters dumped under the cab. You think yours is loud...

My FM 40s on my GP drone pretty good inside. I'm going to try replacing my resonator see if that drops the drone.

Re: Can't hear my new flowmasters

yea i had a 40 series delta flow SI/SO on my old truck. it sounded ok at first but got louder as time went on. didnt sound bad at all. but i wanted louder after a while so i got my cat cut out and had him move the muffler under the bed. both times were with a turndown right before the axle. the drone wasnt bad with a cat and even after removin the cat it still wasnt too bad but you could definitely tell it was louder.

I drove today without my radio cranked, and I have to say my chamber muffler has gotten louder since I had it installed about two months ago.

Where are you at? I wanna hear this truck. How about an 87 C10 with a built 4bbl driving with just longtubes? That was earsplitting, gave me a bad headache.

You'd be surprised how big of a difference the tailpipes make. Cut the tailpipes off right at the muffler making sure you leave nothing and you'll love the sound.
