Thinking about going flowmasters

first all I only have one main question if your bourd you can go on and read what im doing, and my truck is a 98 gmc k1500 5.7 z71

when the flowmaster muffler has a 2.5in pipe does that mean a 2.5in pipe will fit inside of it or would I have to get a pipe to go over it (2.5in id)

so I currently have a summit racing cat back system. It is a dual exhaust system with all 2 1/4in pipe (love the sound but not loud enough for me) when I put in the cat back the seperating point would not come out so I just cut the pipe right behind the stock muffler and used a 2in to 2 1/4in pipe reducer to adapt it to the bigger pipe. then all the regular stuff from there. also 4inch slash cut tips out the back on both sides of the trailer hitch.

well now im upgrading I'm thinking about to options ether flowmaster 44 or super 40.

I want to go with flowmaster because to be honest I don't like the way the engine naturally sounds and flowmaster seams to sound the best from what I cant tell from youtube.

if I go with the super 40 I will go with the 2.5in dual in dual out and get 2.5in to 2.25in reducers. (don't offer it in a 2.25in) I'm leaning toward this one.

if I go with the 44 I would have to get a y pipe and go from the 2 pipes to a bigger one (kinda confused because on the internet it says inlet and outlet size and I have no idea witch is witch) I have to do that because the only way the 44s will work is if I do a 2.5in or 3in into muffler and out to dual 2.25 out.

I was going to use exhaust clamps (worked good on the last set up, and I figure if I'm happy I can take it somewhere and have them welded

I could go true duals but I am trying not to get to crazy with the loudness, and it would prob cost me like twice a much

now that I think about it I may take it to a exhaust shop. any one trust Midas. I cant seam to find any thing else close by for some reason. (though I am worried on how much extra money it will cost me)

forget midas theres way to expensive and most of them suck

id recommend asking around..stop people when you see them getting out of a truck that you like the sound of and see where they had theirs done ..

Flowmasters suck, if you want a loud muffler that sounds good and flows check out the Borla XR1.

My Flowmasters are load. The older it gets the better it sounds! i got 40s And they rock. heres a clip

Why don't you cut out the cat or install a highflow? That'll make it a lot louder but not too loud since those Summit mufflers aren't that loud.

ya I put a lot of thought into it and I guess I just dont know how big of a difference it will make because I want it to be a lot louder.

There is no logical way to cut the cats out the best way I can figure is to get this http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS/JEGS-Off-...58633/12051/-1

and its cheaper to just get a new muffler and stay legal. and I think I will be happy with the new flowmaster 40 sound

Leave the cats and go with the Flow 40. If its not loud enough, use a turndown. As for the Y pipe, don't mess with those manifold studs unless you absolutely have to.

Flowmaster 40's aren't worth the money unless you don't care at all about flow, they're only a little better than stock. Just weld in pieces of pipe in place of the cats, it'll cost you about $60 and last I heard they don't inspect or do emissions in MN so you don't need to worry about that. Trust me, the cats are like another set of mufflers, deleting them will be a night and day difference.

ok I will think about it. I want to give it lots of thought to make sure I get it right. The main thing with cutting the cats is that I'm thinking that since obummer is in office and with all this "change" it a matter of time till MN gets emissions testing and california testing at that. but im sure I would get at least a year or more out of it with out cats.

Flow is not a big concern since I dont think it makes a big difference by how little change I did (not like I'm doing full exhaust) sound is my biggest concern.

and few other things like I called one shop "Midas" and they said they don't do that cause its not legal. and my current exhaust clamps are leaking and I would like to get the welded up.

so the most logical to me is to just switch with a muffler that sounds good (on youtube) and have it welded up

Then i'd suggest highflow cats, which are as loud as glasspacks, flows like a straight pipe but still keep the exhaust perfectly legal. My Thunderbolt highflow cat allows me to pass inspection and it's only half the size of the stock cat, Kansas doesn't even normally have any inspection but I needed it go from a salvage to rebuilt title. The Thunderbolt I have from Performance Curve was $30 so that's a pretty good deal. Might as well do that, the pre-98 cats don't flow as well as the 99+ ones do, the newer ones are like highflows but not as loud.
