depends on where your o2 sensor is , if its beween the manifolds and the cat then yeah u can cut it out an it wont hurt anything but it might sound like crap or might not. if you have an o2 after the cat an u remove the cat then it wont run rite an ud have to get a tuner to edit out the rear 02's . if it was me an it had the o2 before the cat then id cut it out and weld in a straght pipe in its place an get an aftermarket muffler to put on further back in the ex system . hope this helps .

Okay so i took the truck to the town auto repair shop and they charged me nothing to look around the truck for the o2 sensor and they couldn't find it anywhere also they told me that only 1996 and up vehicles had the o2 sensor behide the cat which i don't know if that is true but i have decided to straight pipe it and make it a dual out after the cat. But the problem is that i would like to run the pipes out before the back tires but i was told that it is illegal because of it making the tires to hot and making them bust if anyway can help me find out if that was true please do. Thank you.

You can have it exit out in front of the tires, 2nd gen Ford Lightnings are stock that way:

Not sure if you mean both out the same side like that or dual out each side but either way it's legal on a pickup, but if you have inspection no muffler is not legal, i'd put a Dynomax bullet in there just so it's legal and it'll take some of the popping away but still be loud.

Also forgot to mention my Sierra, which was inspected by the Kansas highway patrol and passed and this is obviously not stock (ignore the dent, going to get it fixed):

Dont listen to him about not running right. Only the front O2 sensor affects the air/fuel ratio of the engine. Being that it is a 91 there won't be an O2 after the cat, but even if there was it wont have any effect on the engine. The post cat O2 sensor is only there to monitor the cats efficiency. Post cat O2 sensors didn't come it until 96 when OBD II was added.

A strait pipe will probably sound very loud and raspy. If thats the sound you like then go for it, but I would add a bullet or some kind of muffler inline somewhere. It will take out the raspiness, without killing too much sound. It will also add tone to the exhaust.

There is what i would like to do. Step One: Cut off cat and knock out the insides so i can run a pipe right through it. Step Two: Put a Y-pipe right after the "cat." Step Three: Run one pipe strait on the right hand side ( Right side while looking at the truck from behind.) Step Four: Run a pipe to the left hand side. Step Five: Put on both side a glass pack or another muffler to make it sound not so raspy but still get a nice low and loud roar. Step Six: Run pipe out of "muffler" and curve out before or behind the rear wheel. Step Seven: Put on dual tips to both sides. Sounds simple but I do have questions. What is the easiest way to knock out the insides of a cat? What type of mufflers would be best for a low but "mean" and loud roar? What do all of you think would look best dual tips in front of or behind the tire? What size and type of tips to get? Thank you for any help.

my ol 91 S-10 had an O2 on the exhaust manifold itself.. not the exhaust.. maybe since it was a TBI.. some had carbs and no O2........ My 98 4.3 has em, but i had a flowmaster 40 that got snatched off.. and since its a static, when it rains it pores here-so the cats been submerged in water a few time.. so many that the last piece of it internals fell out months ago.. ive had no real difference in the sound.. barely louder. No power loss or gain.. Hasent effected gas millage neither.. its pretty much a straight pipe that dumps behind the cab.. no muffler at all.. lol

In West Virginia, as long as the exhaust exits after the back doors, it has a muffler, and has a cat if it came with one its legal.
If want a muffled system, click on the build thread in my sig. I've got two videos of my truck.

You cant exit in front of the drivers rear tire unless you go right under the gas tank. You'll have to go over the axle and behind it to get the tips on both sides.

I'd rather just have the toolbox and pay list price.
