i know a buddy that has a dual Gibson exhaust and he got a couple more mpg...it has a decent rumble to it but its nothing too aggressive. but if you want to go louder, you're probably gonna get in the pedal a little more, hence losing mpg lol

What should I look at for more sound and maybe a couple more mpg?

Exactly! Get on youtube and check different mufflers. I've got a 2000 5.3 with a 50 Series SUV that's really quiet, but I'm pleased. You'll get 15 different answers as for what to buy. I've heard Gibson, Borla, Flowmaster, Magnaflow, and Spintech. I've personally owned vehicles with Borla, Flowmaster, Spintech, and Hooker and I like them all...
I've always heard that a true Gibson single exit catback will give you the most gains, but they are quiet and pricey.

You know youre stock when youre at WOT, your engine is louder than your exhaust.... haha thats me. I need a muffler.
Im pretty set on Borla XR-1 though. Its up to what you want more of, deep rumble or scream when youre hauling A$$

Gibson exhausts are nice if you get the stainless systems but they're super expensive if you're on a small budget. Personally I like Magnaflow the best on LS engines, the 14" case mufflers cost less than $70 so those with some big tips out the back are some of the best bang for your buck.

which magnaflow round or oval would you suggest

I've heard an oval, never heard the other. I'm sure there's not much difference. Sounded good though, and different than the flowmaster everyone has.
I liked the thrush welded on my 97 but I wonder if it will sound as good on this truck with single exhaust

Thrush Welded sound good on small blocks but Magnaflows have a smoother deep rumble that compliments an LS engine better. Either one will work, the round is theoretically louder as it has less packing, it's what Mustangs guys call "Magnapacks" and they sound awesome, I imagine oval mufflers may be a hair quieter but probably not even noticable.
