try this,,,,,dump the exit pipes about 3" or so infront of the axle with a 45* angle. you'll probably like the sound. the mechanic is correct though, that's a nice muffler.

I am new to the world of mechanics so bear with me...I have a 2000 5.3L with dual heads that converge into one pipe and into a borla muffler (don't know model or know how to find out) with two seperate tailpipes coming out of it. I like the way it sounds, it just kinda grumbles but it isnt very loud. I was gonna have the local muffler shop cut it off and connect it with a y-pipe. The mechanic told me that it was a $150 high-performance muffler and that I would be ignorant to take it off. I want it to sound extremely deep and loud and mean. If I hack the muffler like I had origionally planned, will I be able to sell if off somewhere or maybe even on Ebay? If I leave the muffler would tips make it sound better? Any recommendations on type? Thanks.

It depends on what sound you want. I haven't heard a Borla on a 99+ Vortec V8 myself.
Wolfdogs suggestion may give you what you want.
As an example, here is what a Flowmaster 40 (non-delta flow) sounds like on my 2000 5.3l. have a single in/dual out muffler with the tails dumping down at a 45 along side the spare tire.

What does dump mean?Originally posted by wolfdog
