    Keep vortec 5.7 or upgrade

If you had a choice, what engine would you choose for a vehicle that: Has 37" tires, weighs 4500lbs, 4wd with auto tranny.

Currently I have 5.7l Vortec (1997) MPG up to 17 highway, 4L60 Trans, NP241 Tcase (dual 2.5"/headers/h-pipe, K&N intake, slight PCM work).

Looking to try and maintain some mpg efficiency and looking for best bang for my buck. Looking for a little wow factor. Maybe 400hp will do that (currently at 300ish maybe)? Maybe tons of torque? Help me decide. P.S. It's a daily driver, so I cannot just throw a crazy race big block or something at it.

    Choices/known pricing:

    Caddy LQ9 (350hp/$2500 40k mi)
    LS1 (350hp low weight $3000 50k mi)
    Vortec 5.3 (300hp $1500+ misc mi)
LT1 (cheap but Factor in Money for upgrades)
TBI (cheaper but $$ for upgrades must be factored in)
Upgrade 5.7 to 383 (like ht383e type, simpler swap but fuel issues)

It's not cheap but GM has a 383 crate motor built specifically as a replacement for our trucks. HT383E. Great HP and Torque and, from what I've read so far, gets about the same mileage as the 5.7L. Just google it, there is a lot of info on it out there.

Nevermind, I see you know about the HT383E.

Your not even close to 300 HP with just exhaust/K&N/pcm tune

Stay with the 5.7, rebuild it if needed. Otherwise the HT383E would be a drop in choice. If you looking for 400 HP and turning 37's, prepare to upgrade the rest of your driveline. A built 4L80E transmission with a 14 bolt differential will be your best friend.

I have a Dana 60 front with limited slip and a 14bolt rear with detroit locker. I run 4.56 gears. I forgot about the 411PCM and marine manifold option which I am starting to get all the info for. So, my new question is what upgrades would you do to the vortec to make more power with the better fuel supply and PCM?

You mean if you rebuilt your current engine?

Yes. Keep the 350 style block. Ultimatly, I think I would do some form of 383. Then add heads cam etc. Overall, keeping the block would simplify the wiring and and fitment since all that is already figured out.

Re: Keep vortec 5.7 or upgrade

James, I agree with your thinking. I have an extra set of vortec heads that can be worked while I am still driving, and I will look for an additional block so I can get it worked on as well with no down time.

Right now I am looking into the engines internal components for the 383. Any suggestions?

Also, while I am planning the new motor, I will do the marine intake and the 411 PCM upgrade to the current motor to work out any bugs before the actual motor swap.

Here is my current motor set up, but an older engine bay picture.

Re: Keep vortec 5.7 or upgrade

I would drop in an HT383 E. Theres absolutley no fueling issues whatsoever. You can fuel over 400 hp with teh stock Vortec injection, without a single modification to the fuel injection.
GM would design a 383 retrofit package if the trucks fuel ssyetm wouldnt fuel it.

No way I owuld swap in a TBI or LT1, I dont consider those engines UPGRADES over a Vortec 350.
The only other swap I would do would be an LQ4/Q9.
The Vortec 350/383 will be the easiets, take out old engine, drop in 350/383.

Just cheat and get a blower, if your foot's not in it it doesn't boost (provided you have a bypass valve).
