    1996 Chevy 305 5.0L Gas mileage

I have a 1996 Chevy reg cab stepside with a 305 automatic it is all 100% stock and I have been getting what I think of as horrible gas mileage. I mostly drive around town and short trips on the highway (never more than 30min usually) and I have been getting about 13-14 mpg. I hate this. It feels and looks like a small truck but the mpg doesn't match the looks at all. What can I do to increase my mileage to at least 15mpg and add performance in town? I have heard about a tune and such but money is not limitless so I need the most effective mods as possible. Please help!

13-14mpg isn't horrible city mileage. You should be able to see 15 with a full tune up though.

We are assuming auto and 2wd? Check your glove for gear ratio RPO too.

So we are still assuming auto.

13-14mpg is pretty well the average for city mpg.

Ok well i guess my point in starting this was to get thoughts on ways to increase gas mileage and performance. I have heard good things about tuners but I am wondering which ones are best? (the custom tuners only not the chips and handheld programers) I'm pretty sure I said auto in the first posting too.

i hear Blackbear, Nelson, and Wheatley are good tuners..........if u have one local, i would go there if it is a well known reputable tuner that sounds like he knows what hes talkin about.....an im person tune is the best IMO.....thats what i did and its way better than my old hypertech

My 98 C1500 w/305 auto gets 13-15 in town/short highway. It will pull down 19-20 on long highway trips.

Add intake, headers, true dual exhaust and tune and youll be set. My mileage is pretty good for a fullsize truck.

Missed that. But still never replied with gear ratio, and it makes a huge difference in city driving.

FSC tends to prefer blackbear tunes. Do headers, intake, and a proper exhaust (not true duals, unless you x-pipe it and stick to pipe less than 2.5", or do a single 3"), then have it tuned.

    Re: 1996 Chevy 305 5.0L Gas mileage

Thanks for all the info. How much do headers affect performance? I have heard Lt's or shorty's are a lot better than stock but I would have a hard time spending $300 for a good pair only to not feel anything too different in performance. I think I will stick with the stock exhaust so I don't have to mess with the O2 sensors and stuff. Anybody know of a tuner in southern MN? haha probabaly not. DroppedAsAChild what kind of gas mileage do you get? Also Quyonmob I looked at my build sticker thingy in the glovebox and on my truck it's all numbers and stuff. Anybody know what gears a 1996 half-ton came with?

Look for the gu(x) code. gu6=3.42 gears, gu5=3.23 gears, gu4=3.08 gears. If you dont see any of those, look for gt(x) gt4=3.73, gt5=4.10

In terms of gas mileage, a TUNE would be your best bet in terms of a mod to increase mpg. A full tune-up will help as well, (spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter, fuel system cleaner (i.e. seafoam, amsoil P.O.), clean air filter, clean MAF sensor, good catalytic converters, clean O2 sensors, PROPERLY INFLATED TIRES, etc...

Also, I hear the underdrive pulleys really help with power and fuel economy, as well as an electric fan.

Thanks ill check on those numbers later today. Why did they change to doing numbersd instead of actually writing what the options were? The truck is perfect mechanical wise and the cap and rotor, spark plugs, and o2 sensors were repalced very recently. What do the underdrive pulleys do exactly? How much do electric fan(s) help too?

they have always had codes for each option....every code in your glovebox means something.....interior color, gears, power windows, all that stuff has a code

    Re: 1996 Chevy 305 5.0L Gas mileage

i know the electric fan helps alot because it doesn't run off the belt drive. This lets the engine rotate much more easily. Under drive pulleys are similar, but instead of eliminating a pulley, like an electric fan does, they just are smaller so that they spin a little easier.
My mechanic estimated going from a belt-driven fan to electric will net you about 30hp

    Re: 1996 Chevy 305 5.0L Gas mileage

i dont know if i would believe it gives 30hp....im thinkin more along the lines of 15....plus the stock fan is plastic, so its not like the motor is trying to spin something heavy

but yes E-Fans are definitely worth it, as well as underdrive pulleys
