I just pasted all the links I went to but the 2 novak links are the best. And you never know what to trust on Wikipedia but I went ahead and left them up there.
    Gen 1- small block
    Gen 2-LT 93-97 i think
    Gen 3-LS 97-prensent

are you trying to figure out what all is interchangeable? There are still some discrepancies in there that break up each generation, not all heads work on every block from that generation. I am also pretty sure the LS3/L92 engines started the gen 4 sbc, where they got rid of the cathedral port heads and went back to a large rectangular port.

There is also a company that makes a gen 1 style block that accepts the gen 3 cylinder heads.

Re: 350/5.7 generation 1/2/3 link and info???

    In a nutshell...
Gen 1: all 350s up until TBI started around '86-'87 they were all the same outside cam/exhaust/head offerings, etc... Everything interchanged. The TBI engines brought on the 72 deg. inside intake bolts to make access easier, many just elongate the two center holes on the intakes... not ideal but it works. TPI came around '85-'86 I believe. The one piece rms block also brought the cast-in bosses for factory roller options. One piece rms blocks also have a small counterweight on the flexplate/flywheel which doesn't interchange with earlier blocks/cranks.

Vortecs are technically Gen 1 meaning the heads bolt to the block fine but you need a specific intake because the bt pattern is different, and the port configurarion is slightly different. They are the best flowing, highest performing production heads GM cast, alongside the LT1 heads, which are Gen 2.

Gen 2: this engine started in the Corvette in '92 with the LT1, which was then used in the F-Bodies in '93. Last year was '97 in the F-Bodies. The L99 is the "baby" version of the LT1... Same engine design but only 262ci. This and the LT1 were used in the Caprices. The valvetrain parts, starter, rotating assy., flywheel and oil pan are about the only parts that interchange with the Gen 1 engines. The intake/heads/ignition are Gen 2 specific. Some have made the Gen 2 intakes work on Gen 1 engines but I feel it's more work than it's worth. There are aftermarket short runner intakes available for Gen 1 engines.

Gen 3: LS1/LS6 is the only actual 5.7 displacement engine for this family, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. Completely new engine, DIS ignition, and more technologically advanced than the older 350s. I'm not too familiar with the LS family, but it's becoming more & more the "SBC swap" of today.

    '92 Sierra (TBI 383/Vortecs/Comp 08-412-8/EBL/4L60/3.08s), '78 Malibu (Vortec'd 350/4-speed/2.29s), '87 Pontiac Fiero GT (2.8 v6/5-speed)
