OBS Ex. Cab Stock Floor Body Drop???

I have been wanting to do this for years and finally decided to tackle it. I have checked out lots of posts and Jimmy P's tech thread on his SF. My question is on the size of square tubing. I know Jimmy and most of the reg. cabs use 2x4 (I believe 3/16")but is that big enough for an ex. cab? Would I be better off using 3x4?? Hopefully some one like Jimmy or Low88 that have done this will chime in. Is their anything that will need to be done differently for the 3". Any help or insight you guys have would be appreciated.

I would use 2x4x1/4" should be plenty.

As far as 3", I would seriously consider doing 2.5", becuase thats all you need to lay rocker. The extra 1/2" can be a pain in the ass for the little things such as trans, steering column, hood fitmet (my air cleaner hits, time for a lower profile one), exhaust manifolds... the list goes on.

when you use the stock frame rails with the tubing welded inside, i think 2x3x1/4 is plenty. ive seen a box style crew cab dually built like that, and im doing mine also. if you have plenty of crossmembers like you should, 2x4x1/4 is somewhat overkill. i mean ya, stronger is always better, but i think 2x3x1/4 will be fine

I have seen a fully built s-10 chassis flex like a wet noodle with 2x3.

    use 2x4. trust me.

We did 3x4x1/4 it seems overkill but I wanted it to be safe. Anything over 2.5" on a SFBD makes think super tight under the cab.

As it was, my 3" exhaust needed to be put in a metal brake and ovaled..

Re: OBS Ex. Cab Stock Floor Body Drop???

Oh sorry guys, there was some confusion. I meant things done differntly to fit the 3" tubing not for a 3" bd. If you go 4" tall tubing that automatically gives you the 2.5" drop, correct? The frame is 6.5" tall to start with I believe. If I do the 2.5" drop does that put the rocker right on the ground? I would like to do it so there is like an 1/8th to 1/4" clearance so the rockers themselves don't actually touch. I figure with it being that low and the rocker curving under, a 1/4" wouldn't really be noticeable and it would be nice just to have that extra clearance so the paint doesn't get fubar'd. Thanks guys for the response so far. I definately wouldn't have gone any smaller than 2x4 but I didn't know if bigger was really neccessary.

HHH and Low88, what did you guys do for the rear behind the cab? Did you build a whole new rear clip or just modify the existing frame. I want to have everything figured out before I do it.

if you go with 3x4 tubing it gets hard to tie into the front of the frame rail because you cant slip it inside the boxed section. I guess its not hard but just takes a little more work. You could run some additional x members inside the framerails to further strengthen it as well. Measure for yourself exactly how much room there is between the rocker and frame rail currently and bd that much. No need to go any further, not to mention it will make everything else harder

Thanks Jimmy that is exactly what I was wondering about the 3" tubing.

I did that. The top is stock frame, and i boxed it all together. I did it even further back than jimmy i think, and I still had to notch the cab a little.

Thanks for the pic, I saw on Jimmy's thread how he angled that down as well. I was meaning more for the rear section under the box. Was it left stock and the bed was cut??? Now that you have done it how did you do yours and would you change it if you did it again? Thanks guys.

just raise your bed floor however much you body drop it and your done, and as far as 1/4 wall tubing I know it's safe and blah blah blah but I only used 3/16th wall so that my truck doesn't weigh as much as a tank when it's done, with the proper cross members installed you will be just fine for strength

Re: OBS Ex. Cab Stock Floor Body Drop???

i found more pics of mine...

unmolestered frame rail, minus new body mounts

    before boxing

    outside view

front Z before it got modified so the core support would fit... oops!

and even if 2x4 is overkill.. it sure makes the job easier. I would hate to have to put bodymounts on a 2x3 frame. there would be no room for gussets up top, if there is even room for the bodymounts.
