My 5.3 (2002) Tahoe has a sooty black tailpipe. Is it possible that it is running rich? I average about 13-14 mpg, some say this is to low. Ideas?
    Thanks

Is that 13-14mpg highway or city. If thats a little of both, thats about right. I do about 18 mpg highway and 14 city. You can get a fuel pressure regulator and might be able to pick up an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

Thats over all average. I can get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator? Also, I thought you only did that if you were boosting? Also, is an air cleaner (which one?) and a cat back exhaust worth any mileage or performance?

I am unsure if you can get them for trucks. What year is your truck? I run a AFPR on my S-10 and Mustang and neither are boosted. Just helps fine tuning.

That fuel mileage sounds low to me...

My '01 5.3L, 4x4 ECSB Z71, all stock, with a 3.73 rear gets an average of 15.8mpg, 60/40 City/Highway... never less than 15.5mpg. It touched 20mpg on all freeway, on the way down to Florida with probably 1000lbs in the bed. I'm relatively heavy footed as well.

Jeb, no check engine light. 43K miles, bone stock 3.42 gears, always premium fuel 2WD. Ideas?
