    4x4 actuator

I have had problems with the 4x4 actuator on my 1998 SIlverado. During very cold wheather conditions, the 4x4 will not kick in. The 4wd electronic indicator light flashes x3 times then stays in 2wd. After a couple of miles, and repeated tries to lock in 4wd, the 4wd finally goes in. My mechanic has told me that the actuator needed replacing. I had the electronic one replaced for a mechanical one, but it still does it in cold weather. Anybody else have anything similar or any ideas what to do next.

    Re: 4x4 actuator

I have the same trouble with my 1988 k1500 but mine will not engage at all.
I've looked into installing a kit from 4x4 posi-lok it is a manual kit. They tell me that the system that are trucks use is a thermal actuator and they sometime don't work in the cold!!!!!!

Cold weather shouldn't affect the 98 as all should have the later type actuator. The 88 needs the thermal one taken out and thrown as far away as possiable and then upgraded to the later type. Both of you need to check the electrical connection at the actuator. They can get salt etc. in them and corrode, reducing their performance.
