I've got 2000 silverado with a 5.3 automatic and 65k on the odo. The thing gets tempermental with starting. When the truck sits for a few hours or overnight it fires on the first crank. If it sits 15 to 30 minutes it cranks right up. Now when it sits between 45minutes and a few hours it doesnt want to fire. If I keep on cranking it for 15, 20, 30 seconds it will fire up, but with hesitation,... seems like it builds up to a steady running...
Truck has a new fuel filter.. injectors are cleaned. Dealer "claims" the fule pump is fine.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I'm going to try a new fuel pressure regulator. I will keep this post update, maybe someone will find it useful later on.
Yeah, update us on that, I've got the same truck with twice the mileage and the same problem occurs pretty much all the time. I'm almost convinced that the pump works fine except for a check valve. We hooked up a fuel pressure guage to it and turned the key to "on." The pressure went up while the pump was pumping, but as soon as it shut off all the pressure drained back into the tank. So as long as I try firing it while the pump is still pumping, i will usually get it to fire.
But let us know what happens with your regulator.
My dad's 2000 5.3L had the same problem. After reading a bunch of threads about FP regulators, I checked his. Pull off the vacuum line going to the FPR. If fuel comes out, the regulator is BAD. Changed it out and the problem doesn't exist anymore.
What happens is, if your interested, when cold the engine is set for rich anyway, so the extra fuel is just burned. When the engine is warm, the fuel leaking past the FPR into the intake through the vacuum line is flooding the engine and it will be hard to start and when it does finally, it will run very rough.

Yeah, that sounds exactly like my problem- when it fires it sputters for a little bit and idles rough...

my dads 2000burban does this from time to time... sometimes fires right up no problem, other times she just doesnt want to start or runs ruff wanting to die so hes gotta keep the pedal down to keep it running.
his burb only has like 50K miles on it and hes had it since new.

Don't have a pic on hand, but look on the fuel rail, driver's side where it crosses over. Little round can with a vac hose running to it. Take the vac hose off and if you see fuel in there, def bad.
Same problem here!!! 2000 5.3 LT.. I have a new Delco regulator on it also. Fuel psi is fine, Pump energizes etc. I notice when I do start it and it stumbles like stated above and it will run like that for awhile if you look at the volt dash gauge it will drop when stumbling. I found when that happens shut it down and restart and the problem goes away. wtf?? I am now experiencing an small arc type sound down by the new Delco starter and the radio says 1:00 as of today only during start up it's happened twice today. Just had the Battery tested and that tested fine. I'm going to pull the starter down and look for any pinched/worn electrical issues.
I think we are dealing with an electrical ground problem.

I just finished changing out my FPR on my '00 Z71 W/5.3L. I had exactly the same symptoms and when I pulled the vacuum line to replace the regulator fuel was present.
My service manual suggests a light coat of oil on the "O" rings to ease install and I'd suggest that.
Also, look for the small "O" ring from the original regulator inside the fuel rail, I needed to fish mine out since it didn't come out when I pulled the original regulator out.
I'm thinking this will be the fix!
