does anyone know of an easy way to tell a chevy 350 engine from a 305? - I just purchased an 89 shortbed I know the original engine isn't in it 'cause the owner told me, but he wasn't sure if a 350 or 305 was put in

You might be able to get the serial number off the block and then contact GM.

There is NO casting numbers on the front of a block the casting number is on the back of the block behind the drivers side head right where the tranny bellhousing bolts up to plus about 4 inches to the right of the block casting it might have the displacment cast into it as well mine has 10054727 and 5.7 which is a tbi.

Ive got a 350 on my stand right now and a new engine under the bench. since you know everything about engines go take a look at one you have to verify there are numbers there......oh wait you probably don't. it's called a suffix code and has more information than a casting nmuber

this is with the heads off but there's a number there

edit:the head doesnt have to be off in order to see the number

the best way to tell is to floor it and see if its slow... but seriously like those other guys said about the only way to tell is the numbers on the block

Pull a sparkplug out, fill cylinder with sand. If it takes 38.125 cu.in. to fill, its a 305 - 43.75 cu.in. of sand and its a 350.

Looks like that block was decked. (Looks just like the one in my V8S10)

On OE blocks, the pad contains the codes indicated by other parties. (I also have an '87 TPI engine with the numbers stamped in that location)

On the rear of the block(along the transmission bellhousing area) you may find a casting number, and on some later engines you may find displacement (5.0L, 5.7L) cast on the opposing side.

There are a number of reference books you can purchase to identify what you have. You can also find internet references that will give you the same data.

Then it is there. Look right on the top of the pad that the water pump bolts to on the passenger side. There will be numbers there. I have 5 blocks in my garage ranging from mid 70s carbed to a late 90s vortec 350, all have numbers there.

Seriously there is no numbers there so it was either
    1. decked without me knowing it when the machine shop bored it
    .020
    or
    2. Built on a friday at close to end of day and they forgot to stamp it.

I think some engines do come through without the suffix code stamped, some crate motors maybe

Awesome, now I've got a new weekend project. Check both of my 350's to make sure they are really 350s!!! Won't even have to buy the sand because my Florida yard is full of it. I better buy a chemistry beaker though.
