old thread i know but need some advice from some of you that would know. I have a 1999 ecsb 4x4 with 4.8 and 3.73 gears. I tow 18 1/2 foot ski boat and it strains to pull it. Until i can afford to do a bigger engine swap, will sending the pcm to blackbear help with the towing or, because it is a 1999 with this dreaded slow PCM you guys speak of, will it not help?

99 had a weaker camshaft grind that sacrifices mid-range grunt. Also the 99 ECM code is horrible and notorious for false knock retard. Upgrade to a 2002 Tahoe calibration and it will wake it up tremendously. The 2002 Tahoe was tuned to make 275 HP @ 5,200 and 290 TQ @ 4,000 from a 4.8. The 1999 was rated at 255 HP @ 5,200 and 285 TQ @ 4,000. Eliminating false knock and increasing the timing by running the 2002 Tahoe calibration will really wake the 4.8 up. Same thing goes for using the later 5.3 calibration on a 99 5.3.
    1997 G1500 Cobra Conversion, 5.7, 4L80E, 3.73 14-bolt 9.5", L31 Marine Intake, CFM TB, 02 MAF, 0411, Custom cam. Doug Thorley Tri-Ys, full exhaust soon.
