I'm gonna go look at a '95 Z71 for sale with a V8 engine and a automatic tranny here in a second. Is this the first year for the vortec engine? What should I look for? How is the tranny? I've had 2 trucks with 700R4 trannies and I think this one has that tranny. Should I be worried about this tranny. I going to test drive it in a little bit. Just let me know pretty quick, thanks.

No, '95 was the last year of the TBI. If you want a Vortec you need to look for a '96-up. That '95 will have a 4L60E transmission.

    Re: '95 Z71, vortec engine?

Should I really wait for the vortec it has 99,000 on it? Is the vortec worth it? How does the 4L60E transmission usually hold up?

Both the TBI and Vortec are great engines. If you want more power and speed stock, then get the Vortec. You can also make the TBI as strong as the Vortec but it will cost you. I have the TBI and have no problem with it. My Tahoe has the Vortec 350 and it is faster than my TBI but not by much. If you are into speed, Vortec.

The TBI is far easier to work on. And my 4L60E went 403,000 KM before needing a rebuild, and that was ONLY because my old man was trying to tow his tractor out in reverse with it and broke the reverse drum.

    Re: '95 Z71, vortec engine?

I got a '95 (see my vehicle specs below)......it works and was purchased at the "right price." So I can't complain.

    Besides.....you know how they say...

Last year of the model.....they should have got the bugs worked out by then.

First year of the model......they started w/a clean sheet and don't know the problems to come.

    Here are my RPMs:

    55 MPH_____1550 RPM
    60 MPH_____1675 RPM
    65 MPH_____1825 RPM
    70 MPH_____1950 RPM
    75 MPH_____2050 RPM

    (sometimes I get)
    55 MPH_____1550 RPM
    60 MPH_____1650 RPM
    65 MPH_____1800 RPM
    70 MPH_____1925 RPM
    75 MPH_____2100 RPM

    2000 RPM_____73 MPH

Transmission in OD……flat part of the freeway (I-5).

**On regular un-leaded fuel. I believe the pump says 10% ethanol mix. My bed is empty (99.9% of the time)......I don't drive like, "I stole it." In town.....I drive, "Like an old man." Hardly never, going more than 10 MPH over the posted speed limit on the freeway (or in the city).

    Re: '95 Z71, vortec engine?

Would you say '98 would be the best year for that body style? considering it has the vortec. I'm looking at a few trucks that seem to have 155,000 miles - 105,000 on them. Should I be worried about the 155,000 miles? Was '96 a bad year for the vortec and 4L60E?

I would go for one that already has had the intake gaskets replaced...easy to see if you look close enough.
155 ain't bad as long as it's been takin' care of.

    Re: '95 Z71, vortec engine?

yea i have a 96 with 100,000 miles on it. i mean yea if you want speed at stock level get a vortec. if your going to really mod the motor id get a tbi. it takes a lot of money but the vortec injection (spider injector poppets) have a limit. if you arent good working on your own stuff and the intake gasket goes...it costs $400 at my dealership to get mine done. the only reason i didnt do it is because i am at school all day and dont have time. so i went ahead and had the dealership do it and they were done the same day i took it there.

haha yea its something about the dexcool anitfreeze that gm used back then. it ate away at the gaskets. mine leaked on the front part of the intake in the corner on the driver side

Just the original. I can't remember if it had something to do with being over torqued or something like that, but the gasket was just defective.

Dex-Cool does eat away at the intake gaskets. Dex-Cool is an acid base anti-freeze, not an alkali base like the "green" stuff. Alkali attacks corrosion only, acid attacks everything. Read up on Coolants and you'd know this stuff, or just work at a GM dealer for 5 years.
