I just bought a 1990 Chevy 2500 with a 350. Sorry i cant remember the transmission, but the guy I bought it from said it is the "Indestructable 4 speed" no overdrive. He also said something about turbo when decribing it.
I have noticed that if you were to put it to the floor it wont kick down to "passing gear". If you are climbing a hill it doesn't dog down, it has pleny of power to get the job done but I dont know if it actually kicks down or just stays in the same gear. Also when you are going around 20-25 m.p.h. I know it does kick down when you push on the gas. It seems like it has the electronic kickdown.

    What should I do??????

I believe 93 was the first year for the "E" electronic trannys. Yours should have come with the 700R4/4L60, not a "turbo" TH400 which is a 3 speed.

Your problem may be the mechanical kickdown adjustment on the TBI for passing gear. I'm not too sure about the older versions so just take a look and see if there is another cable on the TBI that goes to the tranny.

Here is a pretty good link for basic tranny info.

There's no 4spd auto without overdrive. Is it definitely a 4spd? If so. 4th is overdrive, and it's a 700R4. If it's a 3spd it could be a TH350 or TH400. It should be a TV cable kickdown, not electronic. The reason it's not kicking down could be a misadjusted or even broken tv cable.

8600lb 3/4 tons and 1 tons came with the Turbo 400 in 1990. The lighter 3/4 and half tons came with the 700r4. The TH400 is a 3 speed, no overdrive. 1991 was the first year for heavy 3/4 and 1 tons to get overdrive.

If he said its indestructable its definately not a 700r  That being said its probably a TH400, pretty easy to figure out you either have a 4th gear or you dont..

Also the tv is not a kick down it is the transmission controller basically. If this is out of adjustment by very much your trans will not last long.

    Exclamation Re: Kickdown not working...

I drove it around a little today and it is a 3 speed.(TH400 sounds right) There is only one cable going to the throttle body and no cable to transmission
so I'm thinking it may be electronic. Which module controlls the "kickdown"? There is a metal module with 4 wires going in on the left rear of the throttle body (10 o'clock looking from front of truck) and a module with 3 wires going in (9 o'clock)
    All comments appreciated...

i dont think th400's have a kick down do they? or is that what the transmission modulator does on the side of the transmission. i know that our dually has a th400 and i dont remember it ever kicking down.

I think you may have a point. It doesn't look like there has been a cable hooked up for at least a long time. Either that or it was taken off some time ago. I don't know much about Chevy's yet but I can learn. Also when changing the oil cooler lines I looked all over the tranny for where it could hook up.

I have an 8lug 1990 2500 at work with a factory 700r4. Must be a late year production.

TH400's are, for the most part, vacuum controlled.

If your running the TH400 then your kick downs are due to the vacuum modulator which should be adjustable for shift firmness as well. It could need replaced if shifts are not what they should be.

So could a vaccum leak somewhere in the system cause such issues...?

    Re: Kickdown not working...

In speaking with the local mechanic, I've found that there is indeed supposed to be a tv cable (kickdown cable). I see where it is supposed to be connected to the throttle body but cannot find where it connects on the tranny. Anyone have any info on this or even pics?

    Re: Kickdown not working...

On my 86 1ton with the th400, the kickdown was electronic, yes i'm sure i had to fix it. It had a switch mounted higher up on the gas pedal so if you pushed it down enough it would kick the switch on. When i first got it the switch would never trip. I took it off made new holes to mount it, and voila it would kickdown. My 89 th400 1ton has only the vacuum modulator as far as i know, but i can't say i've looked.

Mine came from the factory with a TH400. The only two cables attatched to the throttle body are the accelerator pedal and the cruise control.

As far as I knew all the 400's had the electronic kickdown like mentioned above.

    Re: Kickdown not working...

when l first bought my 88 (used) l had it 1 week and the friggin tranny went out on it....turns out it was the wrong tranny...the folks who sold the truck to me basicly laughed...they had stuck a handy 400 in place of the original 700r4.....

Check your build sheet in the glove box and check out which tranny your truck came with orriginaly....may be the tranny aint susposed to be in there...my 88 had a kickdown and my 91 has one,,,was quite surprised to read these posts and find out they did put 400s in after 88

    Re: Kickdown not working...

How do I identify which tranny I really do have? I wouldn't think they would have put a th350 in a 3/4 ton truck.
BTW: I did find a single male electrical plug on drivers side of transmission but could not find any type of switch on or near accel. pedal/linkage. Is there a switch right on throttle body?
