So all of the sudden, my brake light and abs light came on yesterday. The speedometer quit working too. This causes the tranny to shift VERY hard and unpredicatable.

    Any ideas what is wrong?

    '99 chevy silverado 3/4ton 4x4 - all stock.

    Update:

I found that a wiring connector was unplugged right at the t-case. I've plugged it back in and unplugged the postivive battery terminal for about 10 minutes.

After that, the brake light was off, but the ABS light was still on and the speedo still wasn't working.

    What do I do now?

Look under your vehicle to see if any road debrie got slung under the truck and snagged the wires. I had a stick once do that. just a suggestion though.

I don't 4wheel my truck (it's my tow rig for the toys), so I doubt anything got up in there. Besides, I looked underneath and didnt' find anything.

just because you dont 4wheel it doesnt mean something didnt fly up in there ... could have been a rat or something while it was sitting too
check your fuses while you're at it, could have a blown one somewhere

With the key on, check fuses for voltage. One of them may be reading lower than battery voltage. If this is a NBS it may be ign 0 fuse(I am not real sure) but if it is an obs be sure to check voltage at the trans fuse. Have you had an aftermarket remote start installed, if you have, check those splices under the dash. If you haven't it could be that the electrical portion of you ignition switch is starting to go bad and not giving the trans the full power it needs to function. Other symptoms may be SES on, no prndl, no tach.

You have a speed sensor that went bad. My bet its the one on the rear axle. That controls the ABS and gives a signal for the speedo also. Once the ABS light comes on, the brake light comes on also.

Re: ABS light on , brake light on and speedo not working

I had to rebuild the transfer case last year. When I installed the 'case, I mixed up the wiring for the speed sensors located on the 'case. That ended up with the exact same symptons that I'm having now.

I have three extra transfer case speed sensors in my garage. Any chance a t-case sensor and axle/wheel sensor is the same?

If its a speed sensor issue its the one at the transfer case, that is the one the vcm uses for shift points

Congrats on the sweet taste of victory.

Thanks for posting the successful fix. Some people will ask about a problem then not get around to telling us how they fixed it. By giving us the fix you have helped out the next guy with this problem.
