my friend has a 97 tahoe and just got a tranny rebuild, now he cant shift into gear unless he lets is run for a few minutes. he says the lever will not move, even when stepping on the brake. my guess is the brake lockout switch is bad, how does it work and what needs to be done to replace it?

What kind of fluid did was put in the tranny?
My guess would be the lockout, but it runs off press or something. (guess)
    Maybe wrong fluid, bad pump.
    Haven't heard of this yet.

his rebuild was done by AAMCO... i know, i tried to get him to take it somewhere else, where i had mine done, but it was warranty work so his options were limited.

are you saying the brake pedal lockout switch that releases the shift lever is activated by trans fluid pressure? i'm not sure im understanding you correctly

That is a thought. I have no idea, though.
    Just kinda thinking out loud.

he hasnt told me if it did it before the rebuild or not. but AAMCO wanted an outrageous price to fix it, so he told them where they could stick it. i plan on asking the guys at NAPA next time im there how much that switch is and what the deal is with it.

i agree it's weird, but he says that it just won't let him actually move the lever with his hand into gear unless he waits a few minutes with the engine running. Nothing to do with the actual transmission under the truck. just that the lever refuses to move if the truck is cold. i was like Whiskey Tango Foxtrot when he told me over the phone, so i figured i'd bring it to the forum.
