My wife's 2004 GMC Yukon's tires squeal when making normal turns at low speed all the time. And I've seen others do this too.

It's done this since brand new as I recall so it can't be due to bald tires. Is there a fix for this?

That's the limited-slip differential not allowing the outside tire to turn fast enough. It's perfectly normal.

    Huh?

What does the limited slip have to do with the front tires turning? It does this all the time, especially in parking lots.

Re: Why do tires squeal when turning on GM SUV's?

I think the front tires actually have to roll a small distance when making a tight turn sitting still.

If you are talking about making lock to lock turns at low speeds, the alignment just is not right to make a really tight turn.

This is more evident with larger size tires than with smaller size tires.

    Does that answer your question?

Is it a Denali? My Wifes 04 Denali does that because it is AWD.

    No, regular Yukon.

Factory tires and the pavement is dry when it does it.

Re: Why do tires squeal when turning on GM SUV's?

Simply because the outside wheel on a turn has to make a wider arc than the inside wheel does. The sharper the turn the more noticeable the difference.

Toe-out on turn is built into the steering spindles angles to make up for this some, but at very sharp turns you are still going to have the effect.

The larger your contact patch on your tires, the more you will notice it also. The GMT800 and newer GMs have a very tight turning radius, but with the scrub only occuring at very low speeds (otherwise you couldn't make a turn that sharp) its not a problem.

Check tire psi too - low psi will worsen the effect

All trucks do it really. Its very noticable in a shop making the turns into the lifts.

probably a different situation but i went to a fairly new Lowes store the other day and every car in the parking lot sounded like they were peeling out when making low speed turns in the parkinglot, guess the parkinglot was super clean and black top, my tires squeeled too

My father has leased a Tahoe or Yukon for over 12 years and has never had that issue. He has a 2007 now and there is no squealing

I think it's just the newer ones with rack and pinion...IMHO.
Ever notice how the wheels "tilt" when turning?

I agree, a new coating of sealer on asphalt is very sticky and will cause any vehicle to make some noise, any pavement will do this when its in the sun and warm too. No matter how bad your vehicle gets, I dont think it could be as bad as the 80's-95 or 96 fords with the twin traction beam. my brother can never get the allignment right and it chatters on every turn.

i attributed mine to the cheap factory tires, my toyo proxes don't squeal.

Re: Why do tires squeal when turning on GM SUV's?

I think some people are confused...its the actual contact of the tires on the pavement that makes the noise not like the vehicle itself is making a squealing noise...

It is the stock rubber...get some softer rubber on there and watch the noise dissapear (or atleast subside)

I'm with you. the only time I've heard squealing driving our trucks is when we are on certain types of blacktop as mentioned above, I see it as a cause of the surface you are on more than the OEM rubber. Provided the tires are in good condition

I have a 4" lift on my 2004 Yukon and just replaced my Firestone Destination A/T's with the Toyo Open Country. The Toyos don't do it so I'm stoked. The Destinations would hop a little too, so not sure if that has to do with tread wear or not, but smooth crusin' so far. I asked the tire shop why the difference and the guy sounded like he was guessing but he said because the side walls are stiffer. All I know is the Open Country's (went to buy BFG's) are much better than the Destination's and (so far) BFG's. Sweet looking tire too.

It has to do with, of course like everyone says, the pavement and also depending on the tire... A big reason too it does this is because you are turning pretty sharp with a long vehicle. Shorter vehicle won't really do it.
