    Transmission Temperature Safe Running Temp?

    Hey guys,

Well i got the scan guage II and let me start off by saying it is awesome! I really like it and the data it will feed out is realy cool, as well as having a code scanner in your truck at all times!

It has a trans temp guage on it and i was watching it closely today. Just out of curiosity what is the normal running temp for a transmission when it gets warmed up in lets say 50 degree weather?

My 04 Z71, empty runs around 100F in those kind of ambient temps. If I am pulling my 3000 lb boat it runs around 150F. In 90F pulling the boat I've never seen over 180F.

Keep in mind that the trans fluid goes through a heat exchanger in the radiator. Under certain conditions this will warm the fluid. 165 is perfectly normal. Red line on the factory gauge is 275.

I added an autometer gauge to my 04 and it runs about 125 dd. but under load I have seen 160. and this past summer we went up Mt. Washington in it with all of our camping gear, bed was completely full it read 200. so you should be fine.

Mine reads at 110-113, but don't forget my trans is the 4L80E and I have a 2006 2500HD. The hottest I have seen is just under 140 towing some stuff.

Anything over 200* for sustained periods is too much.

Too cold is not good for them either.

Normal operating temp is around 150-175 I believe.

That sounds good. So we can agree that anything above 200 is bad!

I'm currious what everyone's temps are running also. My 05 Sierra Denali constantly runs in the 160-190 range driving in town down in the Florida weather. My bro's 2500 HD only runs in the 150 range even while towing

My 96 4l60e runs about 150-180 in the summer...180 if im in town alot and doin hills (not getting enough air). Ive got a auxilary cooler too and that helped. The hottest ive had it was 215 pulling a 24' square front trailer in 90 degree weather.

I found this Transmission Fluid Temperature Chart in a book called "Chevy & GMC Performance Handbook"

    Constant temp/Fluid life (Miles)
    175F/100,000
    195F/50,000
    212F/25,000
    235F/12,000
    255F/6,250
    275F/3,000
    295F/1,500
    315F/750
    335F/325
    355F/160

Yes 200 is considered the safe limit for tranny temps. Ask the diesel guys who actually worry about that stuff. Tranny over 200 or egt's over 1200 and you gotta let off of it.
