Is this most likely a rear main seal leak? And also is that hole between the oil pan and bellhousing normal? This truck is a 2000 Sierra 4.3L. What would changing the seal involve if I did it myself? Thanks for the input.

It's hard to track down oil leaks, but the rear main involves pulling the transmission.

Take a mirror and peek at the back of the block. I've seen distributors leak, intake/china walls, etc. See if you can track it down before you assume you got it. ;)

I didn't see any oil coming from the back of the block. Is that hole clearly seen in the third picture supposed to be there. It is at the back of the oil pan where it meets the bellhousing.

get some degreaser and clean all of it off. then wait and see if it leaves a more defined trail.

Every 4.3 liter ever made looks like that. They've either got a porus oil pan or its coming from up higher around the pan gasket and blowing back. All that dirty grime doesn't mean there is a leak there. The leak will be where the cleanest spot is because oil washes away the dirt and debris when it leaks out.

It must be coming from the drain plug then because that is the cleanest area. As far as go big or go home I would have to agree. I have a 2005 aluminum block 5.3 engine in my garage. Just kind of hesitant to drop it in due to gas prices. Its around $4.10 in the Phoenix area.

Re: PICTURES- Oil Leak. Rear Main Seal?

My rear main was leaking oil down the pan, although it's very hard to track with a bunch of residue under there.

redburn; I'd do it, my 5.3 4x4 in an ext. cab gets 18.5, even with a heavy foot.

see the round inspection plate on the bell housing of the transmission. pop it out to look inside to see if its leaking. the hole suppose to be there. I would look up at the sides of the oil pan and front to see if there is any leaks there.

18.5 MPG? Thats pretty good, my 4.3 has 160000 miles on it and it's only getting around 13 MPG. My truck is a single cab short bed so the aluminum 5.3 would probably be quite a power increase. I just need a garage and some time to drop it in.

Opened the inspection plate and everything in there is dry. The sides of the oil don't have any wet oil like the bottom of the pan does so it doesn't look like they are leaking.

I would also take a look at the front seal. It looked to me as though most of the oil and grime was coming from the front of the engine. If you are lucky ( I was with my 98 4.3) it will be the leak. Mine cost me about a hundred bucks to get fixed. Good luck

Does anyone know if this is a deep pan or not on the transmission?
