Hey, I got a 1991 Chevy C1500 with a 4.3L V6. For those of you who have seen these motors, you might have seen that the starter bolts onto the block. from what I was told, its cast aluminum. about a week ago, i heard a grinding noise when i started the truck. I pulled the starter, and saw that one of the mount holes had a chunk missing out of it. I guess that it cracked off and part of it just disappeared, I tried to find the other part, but to no avail. I came up to my moms, truck started a couple of times, then, i went to move my truck, and it was grinding, then it just spun. the way that I fixed it last time, was that i used a pry bar against oil pan and the starter to get it to engage properly. I was thinking about taking JB Weld and kinda making new threads for the part that was lost. I dont know if i will work.

But right now, trucks sitting on my parents driveway, starter sitting on the ground in front of it. wanted to get a second, or third opinion before i put the JB Weld on it. Thanks in Advance.

is it the inside bolt hole or outside bolt hole. probably be a good time to upgrade to a 350. jb weld wont hold.

The engine block is cast iron.

its the outside hole, I really dont have the money to switch engines right now, almost all the money i get goes straight to the gas tank.

well if the engine block is damaged your gonna need another engine block. soon the teeth will grind off the flywheel anyway, then you will have to pull the motor.

Is there a way that I can bore it out and stick a nut where the treads used to be?

You might be able to drill it deeper/tap it and use a longer bolt.

I just changed my starter last week, so I know what you are talking about. If you don't think bore and tap will work (I didn't examine my starter mounts that much), then I agree NEUMANNZZ. I would use the excuse and find a TPI350 and swap it in. Good luck!

I am not familiar with your engine but is it something a helicoil could fix?

    Re: `91 4.3L V6 starter problems

ive seen this fixed before - and just to warn you its a pain in the ass!!!

thats actually a common problem with the 4.3/305/350 with starter replacements - what it boils down to is finding someone who can weld cast (not just weld it but do a really fricken good job) and have them fabricate the mount piece for the starter and weld it back to the block...not a very attractive option i know

personally i wouldnt switch to a 350...i have a 4.3 and love the mileage and cant argue with the power - nothing a 350 will pull that i cant (i have a 5sp)

when i cracked up my truck from hitting a deer this winter i actually got the parts truck from someone who had this same problem - he had fixed it on other trucks before but decided to just let this one go...not worth the hastle
