It just started running like **** after haulin a uhaul up to school. Theres 160k on the motor and im sure it wasnt babied its whole life..I just checked the oil and its barely on the stick. It was full when i left for school last week so whatever happened while pulling the trailer musta gotten the oil..should I run some thicker oil? Im going to run a bottle of lucus with the oil to hopefully help the problem..any other ideas? I can really smell oil when im decelerating down a hill..(no cats, true duals so I can smell everything)

Is the motor smoking? Blue smoke would indicate oil getting in to the combustion chamber. One thing to try is misting COLD water into the intake (with the air cleaner off) using a spray bottle. The mist will steam and expand and reseat any valve seals that may be slipping. You could have anything from a bad valve seal to a bad piston ring.

I would guess a ring as deceleration pushes the rings oppasit direction and might be un-seating them.

Re: So if my truck is burning/losing oil..

Well I know its down a cylinder now..Since i have true duals i can check the exhaust on each bank..the pass. bank sucks on my hand when i put it against the exhaust..What can i check now? I know its one of the back 2 because i can hear some clatter..Pull the plugs to start with? compression test? what else? Damn looks like that 5.3 might come sooner then i had hoped.

ok tell me how it will reseal the valve seal when the seal is on the head side of the valve versus the port side? The water never touches the seal.

Re: So if my truck is burning/losing oil..

Most likely you have sludge built up in the oil return holes in the head and that is causing the valve area to fill up with oil and then it dumps the oil past the guides and fouled a spark plug. Run engine for 20 minutes then pull both covers off quickly to check for excessive oil retention under a cover. Clean returns out if you find this to be the case and replace the fouled plugs.

Don't know why it works, just that it does. At least it has for me for the past 20 years.

Re: So if my truck is burning/losing oil..

No smoke when it first starts? Or do you have to crank it more than once for it to fire? My buddys TBI valve seals were shot and his truck would never fire on the first crank...always had to try 2 times and when it started a bunch of blue smoke with it.

I think by lookin at the pic below your valve guide seals are shot to. If a plug was black.

I never heard that valve seals would keep a engine from starting before.

Re: So if my truck is burning/losing oil..

So you are burning oil on deceleration. That would mean that the sudden vacuum of the throttle body closing is pulling oil somewhere. I would start with a compression check. If it comes back good then you can look further into the problem.

good plan..I will get a compression tester before I do the plugs..would I just pull the fuel pump fuse and the coil main wires to do this?

On my 83 Sierra Classic the valve guides were so bad I was rotating plugs in a small gatorade powder container with gas to clean them, with the one's currently in the engine every 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. Other then that it ran great, but once it hit that 2 weeks at most it wouldn't start cause the plugs were covered with oil.

Re: So if my truck is burning/losing oil..

Some trucks just have guide problems for some reason. I still haven't got a good reason in my head as to why. Some are pretty low mileage also when it happens. But other engines with lots of miles have good looking guides.

I usually disable the fuel system, pull all plugs, and disable the ignition system. Then turn the engine over roughly 5 times a cylinder. Has always worked for me.
