After driving for about 10 to 15 minutes the service engine soon light comes on my 92 GMC sierra 1500. Where can i get the code read at? I went to one of the local parts house and they told me that they could only read 96 and up. If i cant get the code read what can i do to fix it.

You can check your codes with a paperclip. You have to bend the paper clips so the ends of it are together, pointing the same way. Then find your OBD port under the driver's side dash and stick one end of the paper clip into pin a and the other into pin b. If you are looking at the plug it is the two on the right, on the row closer towards the seats. Stick the clip in there, turn your ignition to run 2, do not start it. The SES light should turn on and off, then will blink codes. They will be 2 digit codes, and it starts off with a 12 code, which is by default then it will read off all other trouble codes.

    Just like he said.
I am going to post a pic of my Camaro, and Silverado.
Your plug will look the same as my Camaro as it's an 89 and OBD I. You can also see the wire I used. You should use the same terminals.
My 96 is just so you have an idea of what you are looking for and where. That plug will look slightly different.

thanks. I just bought the truck from a guy who is in really bad health for $1,000. there are a few scratches along the side and a dent on the hood where a tree limb fell on it, and the truck has 255,000 + miles but the motor was overhauled a little over a year ago. do you think i made a good deal or not?

    Not to bad.
I would keep an eye out for problems. More likely in the suspension steering, just cause of the miles.
Even the TBI's run a long time if taken care of.

It should be a good truck.
Probably just needs a little love here and there.

Yeah do the paperclip/wire trick. It will blink a code 12 three times, then each of your trouble codes three times each. My truck has a code 32 (egr), so it will blink 12 three times (one short blink, pause two short blinks, pause and it repeats two more times) Then it shows me the code 32 (three blinks, short pause two blinks, and repeats two more times).

You can also try other parts stores. Here in NE AutoZone only carried OBDII readers, but Orilley's carries an OBDI reader, so If I'm close I'll go there usually since the reader tells you what the code means too.

Good luck!! I think you got a good deal. My 92 has been GREAT!! I've never put a dime into the motor (except for a knock sensor) for the 100k I've owned it, and it's pushin towards 300k. They'll definently last if they're taken care of!!

Please don't do troubleshooting in PM's, then nobody else can figure this stuff out by doing searches of the forums.

Better to have it fixed so you know when something does go wrong, and it's easier to fix one problem over 5.

Re: 92 Gmc Service Engine Soon

My truck has been giving me that code for at least 3 years. I haven't ever fixed it. It never affects the truck at all, so I've just let it be lol.

I think you have to replave the EGR valve, and clean out the passages in the intake to get it back up to par. Not positive since I haven't done mine, but someone else will either back me up or correct me. You might be able to clean out the egr valve and get it to work. Idk though since I haven't done mine.
