ive got a 97 hoe 5.7 vortec all stock. im getting a super strong fuel smell INSIDE the truck, no leaks outside or smell from outside. i replaced the gascap with no luck. it goes away after a bit of driving then comes back after you park it for a while. all the vent lines are intact and not broken. im at a loss.

My 97 had a strong smell inside and out but i saw nothing leaking what-so-ever. Turned out it was the return line tucked up above the tank. No leak but that was the problem. Gas was stinkin but evaporating. Good luck...

I've got the same issue with my 96 Yukon. The first time i dropped the tank that vent line that runs along the top of the tank had rotted in several places. I pieced it together with hose and clamps but the gas smell is still reall bad. Let us know if you figure it out. I'm leaning towards a bad ring gasket where the fuel pump goes into the tank.

I remember a thread where a guy was tracking down a chemical / fuel smell and it ended up being a bottle of de-icer underneath the seat! I would think your leak would be somewhere around the top of the intake in the supply line. Probably when you shut the truck off the pressure bleads off and the vapors are sucked into the hvac fresh air intake.

Top of the engine to the right of the distributor. You'll see a fuel pressure test port schrader valve in it.

If you double check the supply and return lines and don't find a leak, I would also suggest checking the EVAP lines/components. They could be leaking, or, if they are clogged or a valve isn't opening, that can release gasoline vapors.

Check the fuel filter. It's mounted in that area inside the frame.

is anything leaking onto the ground yet??? If the smell is that strong, it should leave a puddle somewhere!

It has to be your vent line. Is it bent or broken right under the driver's door around the filter area. If there i no gas on the ground, then it can't be the supply or return lines (they drip fuel when they leak, leaving a visible puddle) the vent line is the only one that can leav and not swuirt gas out or alter the engine at all. I would even go as far s to say it would not show up in codes either!
