I had a leaking poppet on my K3500 5.7L. The thing would start and idle fine, slight stutter, but on accel would fall flat on its face.

truck has always started fine however today after sitting a week it took another second or two longer to start. In the first minute or 2 no problems but then it acts like someone pulled the fuel line off . It bucks and sputters the tach goes crazy You let off the gas and it settles back down to idle it has yet to flat out die. It might again just start working fine again. Also if it starts bucking and sputtering more gas seems to make it worse but sometimes if you let the rpms drop an ease into it it smooths out.I idled thru the dq today and it didn't act up on the 2 mile trip home. It does seem to have a bit rougher idle Help

I'm getting ready to replace my FPR in my 96, hard start, stuttering, and running so rich I can spell it badly. I've put new plugs/wires/cap & rotor and it didn't solve the problem. So the FPR is next.

Measure your fuel pressure and take the guess work out of it.

I'm having fuel issues with my 96 4.3. I suspected a FPR problem but used a fuel pressure guage on it and it shows low pressure(50 PSI). I believe my problem is the Fuel Pump but am not totally sure. My truck is very hard to start when cold but fine when warm. Maybe someone can shed some light on the different symptoms between the two?

Re: bad fuel pressure regulator symtoms? vortec

When the pressure is low and the pump running, is fuel being returned to the tank? One suggestion that gets thrown out there is to clamp off the return line somewhere and see if the pressure increases. If it does, that suggests the FPR is opening too soon. If the pressure doesn't change, that suggests that the pump is unable to generate enough pressure to open the FPR.

    what engine and year?

If you have warm start issues its usually the FPR or leaking injectors. Just replaced both injectors and FPR on my truck and cured it for me

Thumbs up Re: bad fuel pressure regulator symtoms? vortec

Yeah, I agree with MRSHORTY. I capped off the return line and the pressure did not increase so according to the Haynes manual that usually means the Fuel Pump is bad. I took it in and had the pump replaced cause I didn't feel like messing with it myself. Absolutely fixed all of my starting problems. She starts up first crank now. Cost me $350 total so not too bad.

Pull the vacuum line off of the fpr. If there is fuel there, replace the regulator.

Relaced my spider with upgrade and new fpr. Fixed problem! I don't know which one fixed it but I suspect fpr was bad.

    Thanks for all the replys

There is no vacuum line on the fpr, it is mounted inside the intake plenum, which is under vacuum.
